Nioh 2 went into surprise closed alpha testing today, several biggish Twitch streamers were invited and are streaming it, obv with permission.

I didn't watch any cuz I didn't want spoilers, but I'll assume they are playing a limited portion of the game regardless.

Probably a good sign that the game isn't too far away. Hearing a release date at E3 is looking like a safe bet.

I loved the hell out of the first Nioh and find it to be somewhat underappreciated. That's sort of an odd thing to say about a game that was released to exceptionally high praise (88 metacrtic, 8.5 user score) and was nominated for various big awards, but it seems like a huge portion of my fellow hardcore Souls fans tend to have a somewhat dismissive attitude towards it as a respectable, but still all around inferior clone of a From style game.

While obv the Souls style games from From can never be topped, I think Nioh was exceptional regardless and the differences it has from the From'esque games work very much in its favor, making it stand out and feel like its own thing, rather than the knock-off accusation.

The way it was broken up into separate levels you could replay instead of one big world, the Diablo'eque RNG loot system, the skill/talent trees, etc. It feels way more 'video gamey' than the Souls style game, which was a good thing IMO.

I'm curious if Sekiro's huge success will increase or decrease people's interest in Nioh 2, I could see it working both ways.

After the sheer awesomness that was Sekiro, Nioh 2 might look even more pedestrian than it otherwise would have. Nioh 2 is likely doomed to be compared to Sekiro which is an impossible standard to live up to.

Then again, those who loved Sekrio and are salivating for more might give Nioh 2 a go when they otherwise wouldn't have and hopefully a lot of them will appreciate it for what it is.

beat it last night, just have to finish the Twilight mission. very disappointed.

felt like DLC or Nioh 1.5, not a true sequel. Same types of environments, reused assets, same enemies with same movesets and timings, same weapon movesets, same tedious loot system, same arcade-esque mission select system, same shitty blacksmith, same skills (but in tree format now).

as far as new things, i think there were 4 or 5 new enemies between the 2 levels, hatchets instead of dual katana (weapon of choice for the demo), the new Yokai realm mechanic (you have to kill an enemy or break a statue inside the realm to destroy it and allow access to chests/shrines). Yokai abilities are pretty cool. everything else felt painfully similar to 1 and I felt like I was playing a 4th DLC

definitely not a day 1 purchase for me, ill scoop the ultimate version for 30 bucks a year after release. combat system is awesome, but that's all Nioh has going for it. really hoped they would revamp the looting and mission structure after all the complaints with 1, but it's literally the exact same shameless cash grab

ETA: and before anyone says I'm just a FROM fanboy or something similarly stupid, I took part in all 3 pre-release demos for Nioh 1 and got every single trophy for the base game and all DLC. I enjoyed it, but it was incredibly flawed (though easily fixable).

I had a feeling this would be the case with how quickly they announced the sequel, but I'm very disappointed to see it come true. very incremental in its evolution

Team Ninja needs to make amends with Itagaki and bring him back for Ninja Gaiden. that is where they are at their strongest. NG Black and NGII are 2 of the strongest action games of all time.

Sounds like they probably did take the path of least resistance. Hopefully there's more new stuff later on you didn't get to see.

I'll still likely get it as more of the same still sounds appealing to me, and I don't have a lot else on the radar anyway.
