I haven't played any of these. They always look intriguing. Let me know how this one is. I might let it be my first entry into the series.
Is it more of a tactical game or traditional RPG?

Game setting spoilers???
Interesting that it’s only normal/hard and casual/classic. I went hard and classic (aka perma death)

Don’t they normally have easy and lunatic as well?

Depends on the game. Easier games in the series tend to have increased "hard" difficulties. Also most of the lunatic difficulties are unlocked by beating the game first and some came out with a patch. Easy mode is basically "normal / no perma death" in recent games. No need for an easy when you can turn off death

Tactics. Grid based combat. Buffs for terrain and character synergies. Lots of characters introduced but they're easily killed off if you're not careful.

I won't be able to start until Monday.

Started yesterday. Normal/Classic, Golden Deer. Claude and Byleth are really good. Next best guys are probably Raphael, Leonie, and Lysithea. The rest seem to be struggling. 5 or so hours in and everyone seems to be doubling my guys, but it's not too bad.

Around 7 hours in and it seems like a potential GOTY type for me (granted it hasn’t been a strong year so far).
The basic fire emblem stuff (the battles) still works, and I’m enjoying all the persona-ish stuff (although I’m not sure how much it actually reminds me of persona). The music is very good, it looks nice, the hub world is great, etc.
It’s a little thing but I really enjoy the chapter introductions. The narrator, music, art, etc. - it all works together.
I’m playing hard/classic (also Golden Deer). Maybe it’s because I’ve been careful, but I don’t think it’s been that hard. In fact if I have any real complaint so far it’s that you can sort of toy with the enemy AI. Just sit back and group up and they will run out into the open one by one. Granted it’s early and a difficulty spike wouldn’t surprise me.
Not a huge deal, but it seems like the biggest handheld battery drain game that I’ve played on switch. I haven’t played any of the Bethesda shooters, but I’ve played most of the other big games.

I’ve noticed this too.

I haven't played FE since awakening, but I don't ever remember it being too easy. If anything I remember having to be extremely cautious to avoid losing characters. Especially late in the game there wasn't a lot of enemies putting themselves in bad spots

I've noticed the same. I'm starting to regret picking normal, but I figure I have two other runthroughs to go.
None of the maps so far have been bad. Nothing has really forced me to split my army yet. Granted, I'm in "chapter" four or five right now, so perhaps it just hasn't ramped up yet.

I started yesterday and I chose the black eagles. My brother chose the blue lions and I wanted to make sure I did something different. I started playing in hand held but ended up docking the Switch and I never dock my Switch anymore.

Are there noticeable improvements? Game has lots of rough edges, but is doing ok in handheld mode for me.

No not really. It looks almost identical.

I picked Golden Deer as well. I'm in Chapter 8 iirc. My whole team is very well balanced. All of my units are making hard mode feel like super easy mode

So far this is my GOTY. It may be my favorite game on Switch.

Did some more comparisons and it may actually look better in hand held mode.
