Walked so much today my Aussie literally gave up. Sat down in the middle of the road like dude, we're done, take me home.
Anyway, I think I've done well so far. Caught Jynx, Psyduck, Exeggcute, Cubone, Koffing, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Pikachu, Fearow, Golbat, Pidgeot, beedril and Evee. Along with the normal trash.
Found Pinsar, Magmar, Weezing and what I think may have been Moltress on my map but couldn't find them in time.
The incense is key.
Edit: Highest Pokemon CP Fearow: 494, Pidgeot: 490 Golbat: 481, Pidegot: 454, Raticate: 335, Beedrill: 317, Jynx: 290.
Need to catch every pokemon you see and then transfer the weakest (smallest, worst move set) for additional candy.
Also, if you haven't figured it out. The pokemon are listed in order of closest to furthest, as you get closer it moves from 3 steps, 2 steps, 1 steps and zero steps. At that point, you're on top of them (giggity) and they will appear.

Where the heck do you guys live? Best I've found is a eevee and a pidgey. Found a level 71 oddish, but that's about it.

I think your lvl matters. I wasn't finding shite until I started catching everything in site. Ton of Pidgey, Spearow, Rattata. Once I hit lvl 8 I started seeing better pokemon.
The 490 Pidgeot took forever to catch.

Same. But it's so different with this game compared to gameboy that it doesn't matter. My bulbasaur isn't even in my top 15 strongest.
