You will definitely get used to it if you keep trying to play. It was culture shock when we all started. You will just learn things.
Grinding out the guns is going to be the hardest part especially when you don't know the maps or how the other players play. It just takes a little getting used to.

All tanks aren't the same. Most players will put reactive armor on their tanks...you can see it, it looks like this:
Don't aim at the sides of tanks. Aim for the top part of a tank or the back, especially at the back. They are softer there and you can do more damage that way. Lots of times you need to have another engineer around you shooting rockets at the tank to take it out. Or be lucky enough to lay mines it runs over. That's also why it's good to say "tank at A" so we can all rush to take it out.
Another pro tip: If you hit a chopper or jet with one unguided tank round or SMAW/RPG round, it's a one-hit kill.

i switched to the guided missiles and still couldn't take out a jet....too many flares

You can also disable an enemy tank with your torch. It's a crafty move, though.
ETA: Don't worry about jets. They don't do shite anymore. Focus on choppers and tanks.

If you don't have any help with another engineer, just avoid the tank altogether. If he has proximity scan and can detect you, oh well, you're probably dead. Call it out. Spot the tank. Someone in our choppers or tanks will help out. Sometimes players in tanks are just good.
