We build our current house. It was a pretty cool experience in which my wife picked out everything. Except I had the general idea: open kitchen/den and use some old bricks from her grandfather's salvage yard to build a fireplace.

did you already have a sq ft idea that you wanted or how did you decide on the size house?

What happens is that your builder works with an architect who already has cookie cutter floor plans. We had an idea on the square footage we wanted to afford (not what we could afford, big difference...we went way smaller than what we could afford) and our particular builder worked with us on any customizations/alterations we wanted to make to it.

Not every floorplan is the same, but there may be like 8-10 or more different ones that the builder uses. We picked one, changed it up a little for what we wanted, but the skeleton was mostly the same.
