I didn't think so, but I won't go into why.
A lot of people think VIII has the best storyline, but it's because they haven't thought about how ridiculous it is.
Of course I rushed through FFVI once on a SNES emulator a few years ago and don't remember it in great detail, whereas I've beaten VII multiple times.
Every FF I've played has a superior story line with (at least some) outstanding characters, but bad translation and terrible plot holes have bogged some of them down.

7 and 10 had the best stories by far.
I loved 8, but the story was retarded once you got to disc 3.
