Are they still doing the Shotgun start format? I am not hating on this and will probably watch but I like watching the tournament the final two days with everyone going off on 1. If the tournament is close it makes it awesome.

All of this over a Youtube production?
As of now, if there's no broadcast partner. There's live events on YouTube that get hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers, if not more.
Things like YouTube have a great future, IMO. There's no trying to simulcast across multiple countries networks, YouTube is available worldwide

Going to be interesting to see what the Tour does. I expect a statement tomorrow. Someone who served on the PGA board said they could possibly make these guys repay sponsor money, clubs etc as well as possibly money won for a breach of membership.
I’m more excited to see the Tours statement then the field. Honestly tho I figured Brooks over DJ.

“RBC is a proud partner of the PGA Tour. Our partnership is anchored with two world-class golf tournaments—the RBC Heritage and the RBC Canadian Open. The PGA Tour has been clear about its intentions in accordance with its tournament regulations should a golfer choose to play in a tournament outside the tour, including the LIV Golf Invitational Series. “We were recently made aware that Dustin Johnson made the decision to play the LIV Golf Invitational Series opener. DJ has been a valued RBC team member since 2018. While we are extremely disappointed in his decision, we wish him well.”

In a statement to multiple outlets, Johnson’s agent David Winkle seemed to indicate Johnson was looking at the tour in the rearview mirror. "Dustin’s been contemplating this for the past two years and decided it was in his and his family’s best interest to pursue it," Winkle said. "He’s never had any issue with the PGA Tour and is grateful for all it’s given him but in the end felt this was too compelling to pass up.”

That looks like they know he won’t play at out again. Man I really can’t wait to see the Tour statement.

PR nightmare.
I assume they'll still try to enforce the ban, but there's no way in hell they'll be able to claw back past money.

They have to make an example. And a BIG one.

good point and they may be trying to capture the youtube crowd as it is that avoids networks in general.

Do they? It's 8 events and the Tour has over 40, half of which aren't very interesting. 10 of which are nearly unwatchable.

Yes they have to. They already commented on it to make sure nobody leaves. LIV also expects to have 14-16 tournaments in 2024. With no examples set you will see Norman push the envelope.

Buying goodwill for the Saudis seems nearly impossible, but trying to claw back winnings from prior tournaments seems like a way to do it.

Be a bombshell if he’s barred from the US Open.
To hell with the PGA Tour and USGA.
If they were consistent it would be one thing, but not a peep out of them for players playing in events in China and other countries with less than acceptable “human rights”.

The Saudis must have told DJ there won’t be any drug testing

One point I’m surprised no one has made is it’s a $25M purse. 54 holes. No cut. The winner I believe gets $4M. The format appears have some team setup and individual. Shotgun starts.
The money is clearly a huge draw for a lot of these guys plus anyone who has an inkling of frustration with the tour is gonna say screw it.
A lot of these players like Garcia, Louis, Lee and Ian etc. are well into their careers and I’m sure looking to bank on their last glory years. Others just don’t give two s*its.

Oh bullshite. China doesn’t have an LIV operating as a direct competitor to them. The PGA let’s players compete in Saudi tourneys too. Harold Varner just win the Saudi Open. But they take exception to you playing for a competitor. It’s not inconsistent. And it’s understandable. Whether or not it will be acceptable in a court of law is another question altogether. But it probably isn’t something that should even be decided by a court of law.

Yeah they have to make an example out of DJ, otherwise you just look soft. And honestly do you think the PGA really cares? DJ is not a great ambassador for golf with the young crowd IMO. I don’t see him doing a lot to promote it, he sounds like a thumb when he talks and really just stays to himself. Nothing wrong with that. Kids these days are more interested in your JTs, Homas etc ones that are active on social media, doing kids events etc. I like DJ but not sure if it’s a big loss as people are making it out to be.
Can’t shed a tear at the Masters and act like you just play for $$.

Now if the major sponsors start jettisoning these players who join LIV, that would make things interesting.
I would bet DJ's appearance fee just to play over there will be more than he makes in sponsorships per year

Name a player that doesn’t play for the money. It’s their JOB.
Posted on 6/1/22 at 7:18 am to greenwave
The biggest surprise in the field and the guy that the PGA Tour probably hates seeing on the list the most is not DJ. It is Talor Gooch.
Posted on 6/1/22 at 7:35 am to Zzyzx
Good for him. Probably got a nice lump sum of money and gets to travel to some nice courses with less stress and less time commitment than pga events.
