Written by a guy who talked his scratch golfer weekend warrior best friend into playing a qualifier. Long but a great read.

Good read. What “professional” picks up his ball up on 10 and walks off the course? Hope Tim does well next year.

A lot of them once they know they're not going to qualify. Better to do it by the clubhouse.

I have played in probably 20 US Open locals and 3 US Open sectionals.... The pressure isn't exactly what this writer made it out to be. Qualifying for the US Open as an amateur and then even when I was a professional was kind of a long shot. I was much more nervous at major college events and amateur events because I knew I could win them.

But yes, many many people will pack it in after 9-holes in the 18 hole locals if they are 4 over par or worse

I haven't played in quite as many as you, but I've played in enough to know this is 100% true. I only got nervous in the local when I was done and knew I was close to advancing. I got REALLY nervous in the sectional when I qualified for a 4-for-1 playoff. Then I made it through and the Open itself was like the weight of the world was off my shoulders. I could have shot 90 both days and I would not have cared at all.

I guy from our home club in Md, Denny McCarthy was grinding on Sunday at the Memorial and came in 5th. Next day right back out for 36 hole qualifier. He made it but had to be mentally spent.

So you've played in the US Open? What was that like? What were your scores?

Shot 79-75 and missed the cut by 6 shots at Oakland Hills CC in Detroit. The experience was amazing.

I was a club professional at the time who went through qualifying on a lark and damned if I didn't make it through both stages into the main event. My first phone call was to my Titleist rep (I was on staff at the time) and my second was to Mark Love, Davis Love III's brother and caddie at the time.

I'd been a club pro at a course DL3 designed in the Brunswick, GA area, near where they lived. I'd gotten to know and played some with both of them (Mark more so that DL3). When I qualified, I called Mark to tell him and to ask him to ask Davis for a practice round. He called me the next day and said Davis said congrats and he'd see me Tuesday morning of US Open week. I played with him and Steve Jones (who ended up winning the tournament, the last winner to make it out of sectional qualifying). GREAT experience.

As far as Titleist/FJ goes, I got a box from them later in the week with 6 dozen balls and a dozen gloves delivered to my house. When I checked in at the course on Monday, my locker had 6 dozen more balls and another dozen gloves. I also had 2 new pair of FJ shoes. I spent time in the tour trailer that week and got a new driver, wedges and putter. I was like a kid in a candy store. I got stuff I could never get as a club pro.

That is one of the coolest stories I have heard in a while.

I read a little bit of it. I’m complete opposite of that guy. Dude sounds like a puss. More pressure the better I play.
