It is a matter of keeping up the pace of play. My group almost always plays five on a weekend, but we push the smaller groups ahead of us and don’t hold anyone up unless we are waiting as well
IMO . . . A single or a twosome is a bigger issue on the weekend.

I actually agree. As much as I hope, selfishly, that my and my buddy won't be paired with someone, it does slow things down if there are too many on the course. If you have back to back twosomes, it may take 10 minute for each to finish a hole instead of 15 in a foursome. That can bog down a course pretty severely.
