His actual actions of trying to start the Saudi league led to him being banned (or in this case, taking a leave of absence) from the tour. He isn't valuable to his sponsors that way.
There is a long list of professional athletes that have represented products and been in commercials long after their playing days are over. Golf's Arnold Palmer being among the biggest. This has nothing to do with performance or being out there competing.

Phil is no Arnold Palmer. He is viewed as the exact opposite off the course.
