Charley Hoffman is ready to jump ship…
He tagged Riggs
Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau liked his post too. This is the perfect time for golf’s new Netflix series honestly. The drama is just getting started.

He definitely has some points there.
I think players just get sick of rules issues the most.

My understanding was that these matches would be played in Asia. Asia is the next economic powerhouse, so it makes since on that level.
And good for Greg getting some payback.

This will end up like the soccers European super league where all the big clubs tried to form their own league and make all the money.
But FIFA threatened the players that they cannot play in the FIFA tournament like World Cup and it fell off.
Actual fans also revolted in Soccer’s case since they lose all little local rivalries that make the club soccer special.
In golf, their might not be fan revolt. Imagine not having JT and others never play players, Augusta, Torrey

There is a great no laying up podcast from last week on this.
1) cry me a river Phil
2) it’s the equivalent of Taylor Swift recruiting all of the big artists to start their own label backed by Saudi money.
3) the Super League will only be sustainable with the PGA as a feeder. However, the PGA can’t survive if it’s best stars keep leaving for the super league.
4) this is the same argument taking place with Lebron, with the European Soccer Super League, with the top fighters in UFC, with the top artists in the music world. They want more of the pie, but what they don’t account for is that 9 out of 10 of their colleagues have fleeting careers that don’t make money for their parent organizations. The top people always get shorted in support of the lower level performers.
5) if you don’t support new and lower level players, you will never be able to develop the next generation of stars.
6) in what league do the players own their own media? Not the NBA. Not the NFL.
Long term I don’t think it’s sustainable and it will likely hurt golf overall.

We should find more out about this by weeks end. The PGA tour is working on ideas to keep players from going. The thing is, the pga tour can’t survive without top players. You can see that with viewership and attendance on smaller events like the Zurich. The Saudi League can because money is no object to them.
The R&A and USGA need to step up and say if you are a member of the Saudi League you cannot play in any events including Majors. They then need to make it where if you make the cut you are guaranteed 25+ instead of 6k-15k. We will see how good the new director is very quickly.

the USGA and R&A have nothing to do with running the PGA tour or the European tour..the Saudi Tour will be run by golfers for golfers and not a big bureaucratic organization like the pga tour which is a company with revenues approaching 2 billion a year . The players play for purses approaching 400 million per year which is mainly put up by sponsors ...not the tour...that 2 billion is from media rights and doesn't go into purses..the players have a legitimate beef wanting to have more of that media revenue go to the players . Yes that 2 billion is used to fund the pension plan for professional golfers who qualify based on merit. If the players had a union they would have gone on strike long time ago...the Saudi tour is a way for them to go on strike and still get paid until the PGA tour..realizes the error of there ways. These young kids can play 29 weeks a yr and still maintain playing privileges on both tours... the courts will never rule on the PGA tours behalf...the time for change has come and its a great time to be a touring professional...

For five years, you are correct. But then where will the next crop of top players come from. If the Saudis only want the top 100 players, they need a developmental league.

I think has been tried in the past with the big 3 in the 1970’s, never say never. But they didn’t want to leave the tour

They run the US and British Opens. They can shut out players from those, same with Augusta and the PGA.

Greg Norman and his vendetta, along with the Saudi government making sure everyone says how nice they are

It's 50-60% of your earnings as rule of thumb. Pretty nice nest egg

The courts will absolutely rule on behalf of the PGA Tour. The only way they win is if they prove the PGA Tour is a monopoly and there's nowhere else to play. The Tour is very confident they win that case.
The majority of guys who want to participate are guys at the end of their career and want to take the cash. It's setting up to be Rory/Rahm/JT/Morikawa/Brooks/Hovland vs. Phil/Bryson/DJ. The Saudi Tour doesn't survive when it's supposed to be the best players in the world and Ian Poulter and Kramer Hickok are involved. But the Saudi's will dump a ton of money into the tour to continue sportswashing.
This is essentially the Saudi Tour.
And here to announce the players:

Yep you are the same guys who think NIL would never make a difference in college football....the Saudi league will be very viable in 2023....the PGA tour is like the Catholic Church this big corporation that no one knows diddly about but you know something big is happening that know one knows about.

the pga has stated (per the golf channel) that if any player bolts or departs for this "super league" that they will never be part of the pga tour ever again.
"As for the idea that players may be excommunicated from the tour if they join the SGL, Monahan remains steadfast in his declaration from January 2020: them or us. Per Monahan’s ultimatum from 2020: “If the Team Golf Concept [one of the other names used by the PGL] or another iteration of this structure becomes a reality in 2022 or at any time before or after, our members will have to decide whether they want to continue to be a member of the PGA Tour or play on a new series.” At a players meeting at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, Monahan repeated his position: Any player joining the Saudi-backed golf league will face immediate suspension and possible expulsion from the PGA Tour. Though questions have arisen if the tour can lawfully ban a player for life, legal experts confirmed to Golf Digest that the PGA Tour would likely win any battle challenging its authority to do so."
