My son and I are going to the Presidents cup next month at Quail Hollow and looking for 2-3 places to play in and around the Charlotte/Greensboro area. Anyone know some good public/semi private courses where you get the most bang for the buck? I looked at Pinehurst #2 but you have to basically stay at their resort, to be able to play there and we already have lodging booked.
ETA- Anyone played Mid Pines? I read that it’s a Donald Ross course that is open to public play.
Thanks golf baws.

I moved away from Charlotte about 7 years ago so things may have changed. But I always had a great time at Verdict Ridge. It was semi private back then and was pretty easy to get on. Not sure if that’s still the case. Course was always in very good condition with fast greens.
The public courses in that area stay slammed for the most part. But they’re all generally in decent shape.

Greensboro area:
Bryan Park. Public, amazing municipal courses. 36 holes there. Always in great shape. Players and Champions. Both nice and pretty. Champs is a little tougher and has more pretty holes on Lake Townsend. Very reasonably priced for the course. A favorite among us locals. It really is a great set of golf courses.
Grandover Resort. Public, no requirement to stay at the resort. 36 holes as well. East and West. Both great. West is easier and more enjoyable. Always in great shape as well. Little pricey but very nice.
If you know anyone around here that are members of Greensboro CC or part of the McConnel (sp?) group, play the GCC Farm Course. It's great. One of my favorite courses around here. Also heard good things about Old Northstate on Baden Lake which is also part of the McConnel group of courses.
Also one to throw in is Pilot Knob north of Winston on Hwy 52. Nice course at Pilot Mountain. Maybe the fastest greens in the area.
I've played every course around the Piedmont Triad. We have a TON of courses here. I've played Pinehurst, Sedgefield, etc. Sedgefield is boring as hell to me. Don't care for it.
Feel free to ask me about any. But if you're playing in Greensboro, I'd highly recommend Bryan Park and Grandover to out of towners.

Just north of Charlotte in Cleveland is Twin Oaks. It’s a public course cheap round, cheap beer and a good time.

Wow, that is some great info. I will:check that out. Also, through my local club there are reciprocal agreements with some courses all over the U.S. I will see if any of those are on there. Thanks again

Tot Hill Farm in Asheboro is a fun quirky track.

Tot Hill hasn't been in great shape the last 2 times I've played it though. Unfortunately.
It is a fun house course though. 17 and 18 are pretty boring but 1-16 are fun and pretty. Lots of huge boulders and pretty creeks.
Tobacco Road is a great course. Played there a few times. Been a few years though. Pricey as hell when not doing packages. Not sure what kind of money OP wanted to spend. I think it's around $180 to play without a package deal.
The Cardinal in Greensboro is a good course too. Pete Dye design. Tight and technical with very tough greens. Very hilly greens and some turtlebacks.
Greensboro National is a decent course.
Another one of my favorite courses in the area is Mill Creek near Burlington. Little pricey, but really nice course.
Oak Valley west of Winston near Tanglewood is a nice course too.

Anyone here in my area ever play the Trump course on Lake Norman north of Charlotte?
Not my favorite style course. Not the biggest fan of courses lined with homes. I like playing away out in the woods with no houses. Just more enjoyable and secluded feeling.

Verdict Ridge is my favorite semi-private in the Charlotte area (20 min drive from downtown). Non-members can play Monday-Thursday.
Charlotte proper is full of private clubs so you should expect to drive about 30 min in each direction for a course that would be playable for you. Some decent options in Fort Mill/Rock Hill SC.
this link should be helpful (I pretty much agree with the list):

I’m definitely going to try and get a tee time at Verdict Ridge. I need one more around Charlotte and one near Greensboro. Is Mid-Pines pretty good?

Good list.
Rocky river, skybrook, and mooresville are three that I was referring to when I mentioned courses that stay slammed. Prepare for long rounds with lots of hackers.

I played Pine Needles over Mid Pines when I was there (they are across the street from each other). I really enjoyed Pine Needles—they just hosted a women’s major.

Is Cardinal not a private club anymore? Was when I played it 25 years ago. It also hosted a very prestigious amateur event for a while.

It's been semi-private for a while now I believe.
