Now let’s see how many of the late 30s to 40 + year olds say bye and go after the money being offered by the Liv tour. Also the PGA Tour is basically saying they own the players.

That’s fine. I bring my own booze to the golf course

They’re making them pick one or the other. Either be loyal to the PGA or leave. Interesting strategy.

Good. Decision time for all.

Imagine if the PGA Tour was made up of predominately minority players. They would play the slavery card by the 11 o clock news. The tour has been the only game in town for so long and has been making huge profits since Tiger. I think there are more players that will take a shot at playing for $4 million dollar first place checks than the tour thinks.

I hope so, the tour is acting like the old boys club, the tour pays out purses, time to step their game up, they don’t own anyone

Maybe I am wrong about this but the only thing the tour can control is the retirement and the fed ex cup playoffs. Couldn’t the big name guys still play on sponsors exemptions and/or qualifying?
I think the tour is about to get it handed to them.
Having said that, I’m still no Greg Norman fan.

quote:Its absolutely strategy they have to play. If they didn’t do this, the PGA tour would wither away and die as players would all play the LIV except for majors

PGA has its money tied to sponsors, views, and popularity of its events. It doesn’t have oil owned by Saudi’s that can just throw money away
If events start pulling stars away, that loses interest in PGA events, AKA loses money. They absolutely need to make players choose between Majors/Ryder Cup or LIV. Anything else and the Tour dies a slow death

If they ever lose that they would be dead

The PGA tour doesn’t have any majors or the Ryder cup now

quote:Hence why I said “on their side”. The majors and Ryder Cup are all siding with the tour. That’s clear. Which is why their stance is working

If the majors/RC ever waiver there, LIV will win. It is that simple

You are as shortsighted as they are.
It’s a strategy but it’s one that’s betting on the younger players sticking around. If the LIV can pull some big names and get some youngsters too, they will compete for sponsors and more. It’s a gamble. They certainly didn’t have to go this route.

If push came to shove, I don’t think most guys really care about the Ryder Cup. They don’t make much, if any, money by playing on the team. I also find it hard to believe that the USGA or R&A will prevent guys from going through the qualifying process for their Open Championships. And if they perform there, they get exemptions into the other majors. Of course those exemptions could change (or done away with) but then it’s becomes less of a tour and more of an exhibition.

quote:I disagree completely. Fans care about the majors only in terms of the name of the tournament for viewing purposes, besides that, they care about the popularity of the players playing
They certainly didn’t have to go this route.
LIV has far deeper pockets and far more money. If they allowed players to play it, that’s where the players will go, and the PGA completely wilts away as fans won’t give a shite to watch the Byron Nelson if the LIV has all the big name players
Going all in and praying the Majors stay on their side is their one and only chance of survival
How else can the PGA Tour compete with another tour willing to pay more money? Genuinely asking
EAT: for example I’m an avid golf fan. I watch every weekend. But I don’t give a frick about the actual Tour. If the LIV got the better players, I would never watch a PGA event. They are dead in the water if they don’t draw a hard line and pray
