It's good but not the best even in the Tyler area. The Tempest is better
Nah. I like Tempest, and will drive over to play with buddies from time to time, but after playing Sat. and Sun., Pine Dunes is in significantly better shape than Tempest. Tempest has a fun layout but greens are hit or miss and the majority of their fairways are hardpan or dirt. Played in a tournament there not too long ago and two fairways had the rule of basically if you hit the fairway, just find a spot with grass closest to you and play there.
My home course is one of the best courses in Arkansas and the greens are pristine so I'm pretty picky about my greens. But for a public course, Pine Dunes had some really nice greens. Didn't hit a putt that hopped either day and zero dead spots. Fairways were pretty lush too.
Hard time seeing PD being the best public course in Texas (just in E TX I liked Rangers stadium) better), but just based on condition, it is certainly better than Tempest.

5&6 were resodded. Almost 3 acres of new sod was put down and a new superintendent was brought from a top Texas course(willowbrook). Conditions at Pine Dunes are better now but wont be by next year. Just a few spots left at Tempest at this point on slopes not really in play and even those are being redone this summer. Greens are pristine. Pine Dunes has always had great conditions just a boring layout which is where Tempest excels.

Lol. The "lodge" there is basically a section 8 apartment building. I could not believe how shitty the accommodations were. They are priced accordingly though.
Course was good. Definitely not the best public course in the state though.

if you go to their Google reviews 99% of the negative reviews are about the lodge. I believe they have new ones though just much pricier and most people still use the lodge.

Ive stayed in their "lodge" the last couple years for a night before we got to our big group airbnb on the lake in Bullard. It is simply a no frills lodge and a place to sleep. Reminds me of a hunting camp with the absolute basics. Just off the 18th green and pretty inexpensive so its not like you are paying for something you aren't getting. They did just complete some larger nicer actual lodges closer to the range that seem to be really really nice and are much more expensive.

The lodge is definitely rough. I stayed in one of their little one bedroom trailers next to the section 8 lodge that are newer. Was a clean room with cold AC and a decent shower that you walked out the door and you were at the course. Pretty much perfect for just needing a room to sleep and a 7:30 tee time.
The nicest lodges look brand new and are much more in line with a resort type accommodations. They were $400+ a night, not really what I was needing but would be a decent spot if it was a guys trip splitting a room.
