USGA awarding exemption into US Open for LIV golfers (+R&A for The Open)

Figured this would eventually happen after the dead end with OWGR points
Seems like nothing but good news for LIV since Norman left as CEO, not that some of these things weren’t already in the works

The way this read to me is it’s essentially an exemption for Niemann
Can’t be previously exempt
Must be top 3 in standings

True, US Open was the only major he missed last year.
Also allows 10 more to go directly into Final Qualifying. Many LIV players went through Local qualifiers last year
Maybe Gooch will try to qualify this year

I said this two years ago. The Majors should invite top five LIV guys not already exempt from other qualifying. Now if they would take my other idea and run the PGA tour from January to August and the LIV tour from September thru December. LIV tour can play in the southern hemisphere the latter half of season for warmer weather. No reason the PGA tour needs to be playing in November/December.
This was all just a pissing match with Jay and Norman. In the end, Norman wins because LIV will survive.
Damn, I should be commissioner of the PGA. I'd do it for $500k a year and free rounds of golf!

Augusta is an invitational. They simply will invite you if they want, just like they did last year with a liv player….
Does flushing it follow golf?

Per their exemption list, they will only invite additional international players (i.e. Joaquin Niemann)
quote:
The first 19 exemptions are ironclad, and then there’s this one. The Masters Committee, which oversees the tournament, is allowed to invite international players that are not otherwise qualified to play in the event.

“Highest in Top 3 in liv if not already in” That is such a small damn “exemption”
The masters actually has far more options to take additional if they want from LIV

It’s clearly different & hardly a guarantee for Niemann. Caleb Surratt can earn himself an exemption into a major.
Not surprised you’re reluctant to admit you were wrong though

There is a better chance than not most years that exemption will never even come into play for LIV
Where as the masters can do whatever they want at anytime and invite whomever they want from liv
It doesn’t have to be international, they reserve the right to invite ANYONE THEY WANT

Move those goalposts

Per their exemptions for an invite, they can not invite Caleb Surratt, Matt Wolff, Talor Gooch, etc

That’s fun to say I guess, but they’ve never done anything like that

Augusta National reserves the right to invite anyone they want

Augusta National Golf Club has criteria for which individuals can earn an invitation, but there is no open qualifying. Here’s a look at the current 20 qualifications for invitation, with ANGC reserving the right to invite anyone else.

Let’s revisit when you said this last year
But you want to focus on “the masters can do whatever they want”
Which they’ve never done
quote:
The Majors are the OWGR. They will work with certain players like Nieman but they clearly aren’t making a major change for LIV

Yes, Joaquin Niemann received a special invitation to play in the 2025 Masters
Do you realize what a special invitation is?

You’re delusional man.
2 majors have made adjustments to their exemptions specifically for LIV golfers

It’s per exemption #20 specific to international players

I’ll give you credit for finding an nbcsports article to prove your point, but per The Masters own website it’s only for international players
quote:
The Masters Committee, at its discretion, also invites international players not otherwise qualified.

No response - just grasping at the Masters invite so you can be right about something
