3-day water fast

I know this biohack has been around for awhile but lately it has gained popularity with Gary Brecka's rise to prominence and Dana White and others extolling the benefits. Anyone tried it? I'm going to try it after the 4th and purchased electrolytes and bone broth for the fast. Some have raved about the results and others such as Layne Norton have been highly-critical. It's worth a try and three days is definitely doable.

yea, doesnt do anything other than put you in a caloric deficit and get you into ketosis.
used to do them all the time, doesnt do any of the shite he says any better than a basic caloric deficit.

While Brecka had contributed to getting a lot of people excited about getting healthy, he’s such a douche.
Only reason to do it would be to kickstart ketosis. And there isn’t a reason to do that unless you will stay in ketosis for an amount of time. I don’t like that it’s called a water fast when it allows for more than water lol. I’m probably wrong but for some reason I’m thinking that brecka said you could have coffee and even bone broth.

I use these strictly for breaking cravings, and clearing my head out(for lack of a better description). When I get into a rut where I'm eating like crap, consistently, because I can't say NO to junk food, I fast for 48-72 hours. I'll be drinking anything zero calorie(mostly black coffee), and supplementing with pink salt here and there. So I guess you could say my "Why" for doing what some call a water fast is for mental clarity and focus. I don't think there is any magic to doing this, definitely not for me, it allows me to prove to myself that I can exert control over my diet and not the other way around. All those other fancy, "scienc-ey" words, I don't care, maybe...it just works for me as a hard RESET on my dietary habits.

+1 pretty much my same thoughts.
I use them after long vacations and if I suddenly notice i started snacking and eating junk without thinking about it. It's not hard, and after you do it once you know how good it feels, assuming of course you approach it with an open mind.
Biggest mistakes made before a fast are either binging the day before or loading up on carbs the night before in my opinion.
Eat a small nutritious breakfast, eat a small low carb dinner packed with fat and protein and no carbs at 7p on Monday then dont eat again untul dinner on Wednesday. Drink plenty of water. Do not binge eat garbage for dinner Wednesday night either. Have some lean protein and veggies.
We have a grossly exaggerated view of food in America. And we have an over abundance of available garbage pushed on us constantly.
The notion that we must eat 3 full meals every day with breakfast being most important and that breakfast being huge and full of carbs is ridiculous.
Worse yet is the sincere misguided belief many people have that if you dont eat a large meal every 4 hours something is wrong with you. Or if you are hungry you must immediately satisfy that craving. Learn to live with hunger. Harness that power and overcome it.
It's a scoffed at cliche, but diet and exercise are a lifestyle change.

Agreed. After a good fast I have no brain fog and I am very focused. Also it seems to help with BP.

I've made all those mistakes in the past and I couldn't agree more.
The pre-fasting blowout, YOLO, death row inmate "Last Meal".....that's a NO NO, you can't do it. Just makes the fasting period that much more uncomfortable.
Doubly so(for me, definitely) is the post-fast "I can't control myself" blowout hyper-calorie-extravaganza. It defeats the purpose of what you just did. I have done that more in the past than I care to admit, but my strategy now is to pre-plan what my first meal will be once the fast is over, and I get three days to mentally prepare for how I'm gonna break this fast. But...the biggest strategy is just the fasting period length itself.
24 hours is too short, as bad as my appetite is, and as bad as I can be a slave to it at times, it's easy for me to not consume any calories for 24 hours. I can do it fairly mindlessly, so I gain nothing by doing it.
48 hours is good, but during the 25-48hr period is when I really struggle with the mental aspect of my hunger. I can't just pound coffee and get busy with something and forget about eating during the middle day of a 72hr fast. The thoughts about food and eating are too persistent, but because I've done this before a few times I know how to coach myself through it. I know that this is THE tough period, and if I can make it through the middle day I will have done something. I also know me, and through experience I know that the final stretch of day #2 starts to become less miserable. If I only fasted for 48 hours I'd be less able to break the fast in a healthy way.
The final 24ish hours is kind of a cakewalk, because the middle 24ish hours is so hard comparatively speaking. Thoughts about food and eating are less, hunger pangs are gone, and this is what makes it easy to break this kind of fast and resume eating with a moderate amount of calories and wiser food choices. If I ever break down and abandon a 72hr fast during that middle period while I'm really suffering.....it's ugly...I'll eat a bunch of bullshite and just have to reload and try again, but if I make it the full 72ish hours and then eat my pre-planned meal (usually 6 scrambled eggs, sriracha, maybe some shredded cheese if there's any around, but it's usually just eggs), I am able to resume eating "normally" with less cravings and less unplanned visits to my drug dealer (e.g. frozen foods aisle, Pizza Hut, etc), so that's why 72 hours seems perfect for me. Long enough to have an impact on me, short enough to be possible.

You’ve just described 80% of fitness industry. It’s almost impossible to find someone who isn’t. I don’t think a 3 day water fast is a bad thing but like lsu777 said it’s just going to put you into or almost into ketosis. That’s it. It’s not a magical thing.

Rhonda Patrick is my go to in the fitness podcast world. Her and Dom Dagostino are probably the only non douches I can think of. Lol

I’ve been following Rhonda for several months now. Lots of good info on cardiovascular and metabolic health.

why not just go on a moderate diet for a couple few weeks and save yourself so much pain and anguish?

so does a caloric deficit. pretty much at the same rate.

again it doesnt do any of the shite he claims any more than a basic caloric deficit does. Just because he says it, doesnt mean its true. Go read Layne Nortons responses to this and the studies he links that prove its BS

You don't need to do a 'fast' for this. Eat better. Get 8 hours of sleep a night.

I do some occasional 48 hour fasts
People can say what they want but nothing cuts fat loss (proven with Inbody) like it. Takes months of eating right for same results. Yes I try to do both with exercise but it is a good accelerator to the process.

Meh, even if it is purely the placebo effect, I feel 100times better both physically and mentally after a good fast. They always help pull me out of a rut. Probably just the mental effect of accomplishing a goal and conquering a physical desire, but still, fasting definitely improves my mental state. God recommends fasting as a form of healing. It must be good for something.

If I could do that I would, but unfortunately I trap myself in bad decisions that take some untangling and the 72hr fast gets it done.

You probably got a lot more from it than you realize. Learning to be discipline is a huge thing. Christians dont fast for the health benefits, but because its a lesson in denying self.
If one is only looking for a quick fix weight loss...yeah its not a magic bullet. Even for
someone like that it is a learning opportunity

No shite. I’m fit, don’t drink anymore and eat healthy. But it’s still noticeable the sharpness experienced after fasting.

It’s ketosis. Been fasting 60 - 64 hrs twice a week since March and down 45 lbs. Works.
Recently started following these 3, and giving up wheat:
2 slices of whole wheat bread has more glucose than a snickers bar.
Our ancestors fasted all the time between successful hunts and our bodies are evolved for it.
