I've run with my HR monitor for several years now. I've gotten comfortable with my pacing and HR to the point where I could probably tell you what it was within 5 points without looking at it.

I've noticed lately that I can make my HR go up simply by thinking about running fast. Monday is my slow recovery day. I'll run 3-6 miles in a 135-145 zone. Today, there was a kid at the track working on his forty. One lap, he just happened to take off when I got even with him. I maintained my pace while he dashed off down the track. I just happened to look down at my Garmin and it read 168. Simply watching the kid run a forty increased my HR by 30 points. What's weird is that if I were to run at a 168 HR pace, I'd be breathing heavy and feeling it. In this instance, it didn't feel any different than my 138 pace.

If I think about running a 5K while on my recovery run, my HR will increase anywhere from 5-15 points. Again, with no perceivable change physically. Just a jump on the monitor.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Your body was ready to take him on.

My thought is that just seeing someone run by you puts some competitive drive into you that gets you amped.

I think this is it. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing.

I haven’t experienced this yet but I’ve noticed my resting heart can now get into the high 40’s since I’ve lost some weight and have been doing weekly spin classes.

They say below 60 is a good resting heart rate hopefully below 50 is ok too.
