Looking for a little input here. I have NEVER had an injury or any other knee trouble EVER.

But...

Earlier this week, I started noticing what felt almost like an irritation around my kneecap. Like, the sensation was mildly painful, but much more as if my pants were catching the hair on my knee and pulling at it.

I finally have figured out that it is internal and not external (although mentally, it still registers as feeling like the hair pulling), but any attempt to deliberately recreate the sensation is impossible. I can rub hard on it or try to massage it deep and probe various spots - nothing. My trainer even had me do standing knee extensions with a pretty heavy band and...nothing. (From that, he declared "well, at least it's not your patellar tendon".)

If I run, I don't feel it. If I bend deep, nothing. If I kneel with my full weight on it...nothing. It's almost as if it pops up only when I'm not doing anything - although it does not hurt at all if I'm sleeping or otherwise just hanging out.

The only other info I have that is possibly relevant: I played golf Wednesday (didn't feel anything) and I guess I must have had a particularly intense training session on Monday, as I had a little nerve pain in my upper leg (same one with the knee) all week.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?!!? I can live with the mild discomfort, but would like to find out if I'm on the precipice of making something minor much more severe.

Help! TIA!

So, on one hand, sometimes things just hurt, especially as you get older. That’s just part of living. You can have no structural damage and be sore or experiencing minor pains from fatigue, overuse, the weather, etc. I would suggest stretching your hamstrings, hips and achilles. I was experiencing knee pains myself, but when I stretches my hammies and achilles, the pain went away. I also suggest spending time in a deep body weight squat. Even if you have to lean against a wall or hold on to a squat rack, squat as low as your body lets you and just sit in there. Open up your hips, pull yourself forward to stretch your ankles and upper back and just try to get comfortable in a deep squat. I find that helps, too.

You could be describing Hotta’s fad pad impingement. Goff as fat pads sit on either side of your knee cap and can get irritated. That or patellafemoral syndrome.
