A good start is reading the label of everything you eat/drink. Figure out how much sugar your taking in and cut it in half. Once you get consistent at that, cut it in half again. Sugar is likely your biggest enemy.

One thing you learn in the Army is that anything is waiverable.
The question you should be asking is, what would being 50 lbs overweight inhibit. In this case, it’s most likely the APFT.
If the goal is to pass it, and thus be in the Army no matter what your weight (waiverable or not needed), you need to practice the APFT.
As I gear up for my next one in a couple months, I will do the following:
First week:
Monday - 100 push-ups, 150 sit-ups, 10 pull-ups, 50 air squats.
Tuesday - 4-6 mike slow moderate run
Wednesday - same as Monday
Thursday - 100m sprints 10x
Friday - same as Monday
Rest on the weekend.
For each subsequent week, I will increase the amount of exercise reps by 25-50.
If you want a benchmark, do the APFT (specifics can be found online). Do the workout above or variant of it, and do another test in 3 months. If you don’t pass it (60% in each event), you have other issues than weight inhibiting you from joining the Army.

I was about 20 pounds over my max limit when I enlisted but passed the tape.
During basic (on the days we weren’t given mre’s) I ate protein and veggies only. No fruit no starches heck I didn’t even drink milk. The only day I upped the carbs was on Sunday morning breakfast.
As far as mre’s go, I just typically ate the main part of it.
I lost way more weight than necessary, I was very ripped but did get weaker

FLETC boat operations? Did those guys carry Glock 34 Tactical Practicals?

I was 230 when I joined. As long as you can run a mile in under 20 minutes you won’t have to do the extra week or two of fat camp before basic training. I think that’s still the requirement. Once you are in basic training, you will shed weight within weeks. For reference, at the end I weighed 154 pounds and ran 2 miles in 13 minutes flat in my final PT test. Just get into basic and the army will take care of the rest. Congrats by the way and good luck potential battle buddy.

I went on a “crash” diet a couple of years ago and haven’t gained anything back.
I got really fat after I ETSd. I drank protein shakes for about two straight months and lost 40 pounds. Nothing special, just Premier and GNC from Sam’s. I walked almost every day also.
It’s very hard to stick to it at first, but get a scale and weigh yourself every morning. You’ll drop like a pound a day. Once you see the weight falling off and your pants size shrinking, that’ll be enough motivation.
I’ve lost about 30 more since then (2 years ago) just by eating correctly and going to the Y. I’ve gotten to where I do shakes for breakfast and lunch and then eat a protein bar for a snack. Then I just eat a regular dinner.
I’m still about 40 away from where I want to be.
Also, do push ups, sit ups and run.
Your goal should be 40 pushups and 50 sit-ups without stopping. And just run.
And run some more. Try to have an 8 minute mile when you show up.

I was an Army recruiter for 4 years, there's no waiver for weight.

There’s a waiver for almost everything in the Army

Agreed. If you’re overweight but don’t exceed a certain body fat percentage, I don’t remember the specifics its been a a while, they were able to take a step test. They would measure the heart rate after a five minute little cardio session. It involved stepping up and down on a box to a beat at a pretty decent pace. They very rarely passed because the person administering the test was a nazi ensuring they kept pace. They’re fat for a reason, cardio wasn’t something they did lol
