You live out in the country? We always just used a little gasoline but we didn't care what the yard looked like. I wonder if soapy water would work on them like wasps?

dawn will kill the workers on top but that’s it. The bifen is cheap enough, I’m not saying I haven’t used gasoline before but not for volume maneuvers

Ditto here on the raised bed ant issue but oddly, finally got things well under control using only 1:1 ratio of granulated sugar to raw grits. Was skeptical when it was recommended, but I'll be damned if it didn't work here. You can also just take a small shovel full from one pile and dump that on a separate ant hill. They go to war with each other to protect their own, and the number of dead you'll find the next day using that method alone will happily surprise you.

Longtime H&G lurker here and late to the party from your original post. But Lord, yesss! I'm in Ponchatoula area and every few yrs they seem particularly bad, though I fight the lil bastards to some degree annually. I'm not originally from this part of the state but after moving back to La. have been here about 12 yrs now, and I've commented to others many times that fire ants in this area are like regular fire ants on steroids! Never seen the likes. I use Bifen as well. Only thing that seems to actually eradicate them (uhm...for awhile). Most of my neighbors do very little gardening, but I am always fiddling around outside, so I'm fine with even just relocating them to their lots instead.
