I had the same inquiry a few weeks ago.
I ended up purchasing a 12,500 Westinghouse at Home Depot. Total cost, including tax and delivery was just over $1,100.
Make sure you add up what you will have plugged in to ensure it powers what you need. Also, get a dual or triple fuel. Gasoline may be a tough thing to get if the power goes out for a long time. Propane does not go bad, and you should have a few tanks for crawfish boils on hand anyway. I bought a 40 pound tank as well.
Good luck!

Spend the extra money for a Honda. I’ve had an older model of the linked generator for about 12 years. Only maintenance done has been changing the oil and cleaning the air filter. I always run fuel out of the carb when done using. Always starts on the first pull.

What do you guys think of the one costco sells? Firman 7500W Running / 9400W Peak Tri Fuel Generator
I have the dual fuel version. It worked great for me after the hurricane last year. Probably got 8-10 hours off a tank of gas or a bottle of propane. Ran my whole house except for central ac. We used two window units at night. Also ran a fridge, a chest freezer, and stand up freezer. Hooked up to my house through a 30 amp or 50 amp breaker I installed into my panel.

Thanks y’all - super helpful. Was eyeing down the generac mentioned above and was feeling like it was best in class outside of the Honda. Thinking I’ll go that route. I’m still too cheap for the Honda at this stage!

FYI you can take your Generac with you when you leave. My folks did that for their new house. You just have to have a concrete pad built at the new location.

I back fed my whole home for 41 days after Laura with a generac 6500 from Home Depot. The only time I shut it off in that 41 days was to change the oil every two days and had it back running in ten minutes. We powered everything we wanted without thinking twice about being conservative at all, including our 2.5 ton central ac unit. The only thing we didn’t run was the stove and the dryer. Every evening I would shut off the ac and run the water heater for 30 minutes so we could all take showers. It would noticeably bog down the generator but nothing else we did would even bother that thing.

Have y’all looked into THD* of generators and how that can harm electronics ?
I'll hijack this thread a bit. All of the sensitive electronics that I'd want to run during a power outage would be around 400-500 watts or so (at one time). Is there a plug-in power inverter that I can hook up to my normal portable generator to run my sensitive electronics with? The only ones I see that aren't direct wire are cigarette plugs rated for only a couple hundred watts.

Ive been having a Honda 2000 for close to 20 years, never let me down. It runs TV, computer, fridge, freezer, couple lights, and a small AC window unit, if you cut off an item or two. Full tank runs for 8 hours, can't hear it from inside, weighs 65 lbs.
I have a 6kw unit for my well water pump, if it goes out, never used it in 16 years. Of course a major catastrophe may require more power, but its never happened to me and I've been here my entire life. Don't buy cheap, stock up with gasoline, that's the real issue.
