I do like the idea of the big portable units. I have a 20kw diesel on a skid on the side of house,

Regarding this, I'm talking about a big portable gas unit, such as the Generac 17.5kw, or 15kw, but I think that idea is out the window because it looks like the most I could utilize out of these is 12kw, due to the 50amp main breaker on those units, so utilizing an interlock kit with a generator breaker on my panel would be limited to 50 amps. Am I correct in that assumption? If so I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and get a standby...

On the same token though, how are those tag-along diesel units being tied into a house panel?

I just paid my Atmos bill today. My 22kw ran for 8 days, and the bill was right at $250. I don't know who came up with the $100 a day thing, but that's not the first person I've heard say that.

I’m on Entergy, looks like my 20KW Cummings cost around $35/day to run. Well worth the $9600.00 cost.

I see generac makes a 17,500 watt portable, which would power my whole house,

Mom has one of these, we feed it through a 50 amp plug. Runs the whole house easily.

I will say it drinks gas fast though.

We will be putting a natural gas standby on our new home and will be keeping the generav as a backup in case of natural gas issues

She’s able to get enough power through one 50 amp plug for everything? I’d have no problem installing an NG/ LPG adapter and letting it roll. Just concerned about the amperage limit.

I have a 50 amp cord, but only a 35 amp breaker on the generator. I ran central AC, lights, refrigerator, etc. with no issues. Now, if I ran the dryer, microwave, dishwasher, and everything at the same time too, maybe it's an issue. But for emergency situations it shouldn't be a problem. I can be sure to give the AC a break while drying clothes.

The important things. We can run whole home AC, all lights, fans, receptacles, fridge, stand up freezer, use microwave when needed.

We don't turn on stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer And we will turn on water heater at bath time.

Never had an issue.

First time we used it we were only backfeeding through the 30 amp dryer plug so we were limited more but we upgraded to use the 50 amp and put a 50 amp breaker and plug on the house

I don’t have that many hours on it, longest outage so far was 13 hours. So far I like it, It is quieter than the Generacs my neighbors have. Total installed cost including tax was $9600 back in April. When power goes off it only takes 4-5 seconds for it to start and transfer the house to the generator. It is really impressive when utility power comes back on and it transfers back. If you are paying attention you will see the lights blink, it is so fast the TV or computers don’t shut down.
