The shed is 12'x12' and I want a 6/12 roof on in it.

Should the top of my ridge board be 38 1/2" from the top of the top plate?

After making a 26.6° cut on the end of the rafter, how far down should I measure from the long point to cut the birds mouth? 80 1/2" and then take away 3/4" for the thickness of the ridge board? Correct?

My calculator is telling me 36". Rise is (12'/2 )x(6/12) = 36"

my calc is spitting out 79 11/16" if you care about tight tolerances.

make sure you check my math . It's been about 15 years since I was on a framing crew.

I was at 79 3/4" so you just confirmed that I was close enough.

Let me see if I can explain this in words.

79.75" measurement is length on top of rafter. From long point of rafter down to birdmouth but put a mark on top of the rafter not at birdmouth. Plumb down from that mark for your birdmouth for your plumb cut of birdmouth.

If you had a framing square, you could just step it off 6 times using 6/12 pitch.

Can't do that with a speed square.

I do have a framing square, and this guy explains the method pretty well.
