The odds of picking a particular DE recruit as a future full-time starter is very low. Most don't start full-time during their careers.

Thought they were going to make him a MLB? By the way i have watched him in person and while he is a good player i dont think he will ever make a starter imho.

Good for you!

Now you can take your opinion and with $2.00 you can get a cup of coffee.

How exactly do you geeks get hard ons for high school football players? I know you have raging hormones, but are you really that queer?

So, Bates is probably:
c. 6-2
c. 225
c. 4.75

Maybe his teamate slightly exagerated, but his overall assessment seems about right. HB is not tall or real heavy (6-2, 225) = "not that big" and slow (4.75) = slow.

4.75 is slow, but if he plays DE, it's average to good. His low shuttle times are more important for a DE than the 40, IMO. His quickness off the snap is more important than his straight-line speed. That's why he can be a handfull for guys as talented as Chris Faulk. His height is a little low for my taste, but he's young and maybe could grow a couple inches in the next year or two. I just hope his frame will allow him to bulk up, add about 40 pounds, and keep his quickness.

Bates is much better than the posted "average"

Is he the next Tyson Jackson? probably not.Bates will most likely not grow taller than 6'3"

However... In 2 years he may gain about 20 pounds and get up around 250. If he can maintain a 40 time of about 4.8 seconds with good quickness off of the ball, He may be a solid speed rusher, but it is VERY hard to project high school talent.

Anybody who thinks Bates is "average" is insane. he had 5 sacks against a pretty solid Shaw team.

His biggest problem is anticipation and gathering himself to make a tackle. He can make up for overrunning plays with his athleticism at the HS level, but in the SEC he needs to gather himself, make a square tackle and grab cloth!

When you can get a quality kid who wants to come to LSU, you take him.

Heard the same thing about Beckwith when he was coming out of high school. Same source. High school teammates.
They went as far as to say that Beckwith was the forth or fifth best player on their defense.

See how that turned out?

Bates may never play a down but it is a bit too early to write him off. Also, a HS coach at the camp told me the kid was unblockable in one on ones.

He was unblockable in one on ones. He won the Scout Combine MVP award, and that camp was loaded.

There is truly a lot of FAIL on this board at times, and Bates is one of them. He will be a solid contributor on defense for LSU, bc unlike many of the DLs we've had, he has quickness and pass rush to get around the corner. The racism stuff on this board really isn't funny at times.

Reverse racism from a bunch of people who have never seen any of these people play.

the last good ATHLETE we had at LSU who was white was a shitty football player (luke sanders)

white people generally aren't as athletic as black people. it's not racism

and if you are a stud athlete and you're white, you likely won't be low-ranked like bates

Well, the two best players on Texas' team are white in McCoy and Shipley. There are other examples as well.

And Steltz was the last white good athlete we had, and he was one of the best LSU players of this decade. As well as Hester.

he wasn't THAT good as an athlete. he wasn't bad or anything, but he was nothing special as an athlete

Who gives a shite? We're talking about players. They are both damn good athletes though.

There are white guys who can rush the passer like Kyle Vanden Bosch, bc yes, "motor" has a lot to do with sacking the QB. You would think more people would appreciate that skill considering Alem was probably the only guy with a "motor" on our defense line last year. I certainly wouldn't have minded another kid with a "motor" when Troy was embarrassing us up and down the field last year.

Just like "motor" had a lot to do with why Kyle Williams was one of LSU's best players this decade.

Again, we're not talking about the olympics here sfp, we are talking about football players. And Steltz, Hester, and Williams happen to be 3 of the 10 best LSU players this decade IMO.

Bates, Rocky and all the other kids that received offers are good football players and that is why they were offered. It does not matter if they are white, wtf slow. That is just stupid...McCoy, Tebow and many other white boys that play college ball would disagree with you. These kids you all bash on here have 4-5 years to prove themselves. I do not understand how some of you bash these kids to the extent that I have seen. They all have something in common, they all received scholarships to play for LSU and that stands for something. There are kids who we think will do well and they end up doing nothing and vise virsa.

PS: I guess you would not have approved of Hester either, since he is white...

no it's more about athletes. at least that's what i was referring to

alem is our most explosive pass rusher since pittman in 2003

Jamarcus
Laron
Dorsey
Black
Bowe
Clayton
Lafell
Tyson
Scott

all better than those 3 off the top of my head
