It can be tied to performance. You can have incentives for the team reaching the playoffs, bowl games, national championships, etc. You can have incentives for individual achievements like playing time, receiving national awards and honors, etc.

QB LSU: I want The Elon QB Landen Clark, signed then I want full court press on Leavitt. Clark can start year as QB1 if Leavitt not ready or can’t beat him out.

NFL did that. Then you had players bitching about not enough carries, not enough targets etc. so the contracts changed slightly to rookie of the year, making the pro bowl that kind of stuff.
Yards gained is a team achievement also
