But in the case of TJones, it would likely be that he'd enroll in the fall, walk-on, and then get a scholarship in January, 2010. He could not play in 2009 even as a walk-on, but could practice
No he can't walk-on and practice in 2009. If he did it would count as a year of eligibility.
He can enroll in the fall and pay his own way but only part-time. If he is enrolled full-time even if not on the team nor practicing it counts as a year.
You only have five years to play four. The clock begins when you enroll full-time.

How does a grey shirt differ from a preferred walk-on?
As I understand it, a gray shirt is guaranteed a scholarship in the next recruiting class, and delays until 11 mos after signing a LOI to enroll (thus preserving, effectively two years, potentially, of eligibility), and counts against a future class. A PWO will receive a scholarship when one becomes available, which may be never (but they also have number crunchers waiting to make sure that no scholarship ever goes to waste, even if they have to give it to a senior walk-on.) and only counts against any scholarship limits when he receives one. Also, a PWO is guaranteed a spot on the team, and is generally treated like a scholarship athlete in every way, except the tuition and room & board.
There are many flavors of preferred walk-ons. Matt Mauck, for example, was a preferred walk-on, courtesy of the Chicago Cubs organization.

Greyshirting is what Rocky Duplessis is doing.
Jones would enroll in January 2010 and count towards the 2010 class.

Harry Coleman also was offered a greyshirt becasue he didn't have grades but then he got his grades and we made him greyshirt anyway. Pretty much the same as here except he committed while he was still unqualified.

Id like to see Tahj at LSU, I think in 3/4 years he, Mingo and Minter would be a pretty solid LB group.
Tahj is what we need in todays game, you need small fast LBs to keep up with these spread offenses.

A grey shirt is as simple as enrolling in the spring instead of the fall and counting against the next years numbers.
you still are able to redshirt, you still have 5 to play 4. You don't have to pay your way for the fall. (unless you want to go to school in the fall)

This part sounds a little odd, though you very well might be right. I would think, though, that your eligibility (5 years to play 4) would be based on your involvement with the team. If you are connected to the team in any capacity as a student, it makes sense-- it becomes arguably unfair from a competitive standpoint to allow student athletes to indefinitely go to school for free. But if you are just a student paying your own way, and you don't have any involvement at all with the team, I wouldn't think you would use any eligibility.

Well you would be wrong. It begins when you enroll full time.

I don't think you can enroll full time in the fall though or practice in the fall. You enroll in spring and play spring ball. Trindon was a greyshirt.

I'm pretty sure Tahj is still waiting on ACT score. Not sure on current offer but he told me visit with Chavis went very well last week. I think if he gets eligible he'll be a Tiger. TCU was also in to visit last week and they are putting on a full court press and will prob offer even if he is not eligible

Tahj needs 1 pt to his total composite score on any part of the ACT.He has offers from LSU,OLE MISS,ARK AND TCU.ALABAMA came in on him just recently, but no offer yet.Tahj is taking his official this weekend to LSU.He is taking one to OLE MISS and trying to fit one in to TCU at this time.FWIW he has never been on LSU'S back burner. He was the first one to be offered back in Feb. and they have pretty much camped out in Sulphur since then.Miles has just been trying figure out his grade situation.Tahj has been at the top of their LB board and that hasn't changed.CHAVIS was in Sulphur the day after he was hired. All of this is straight from his sponsor and counselor"my ex-wife".
