yeah.. that is how stovall got the job...

I am assuming that this was a mad shuffle since all coaches looking to move had been secured and it was in the middle of recruiting season.

Anybody rememeber the other names that were being considered at the time???

prior to Bo R. getting the job...

Bobby Bowden and Lou Holtz were considered in fact Bowden may have been offered the job..

after the crash - reasonably certain Stovall was the only one.

Paul Ott Carruth, I remember that name for some odd reason. Who'd he end up playing for?

I was 13 at the time, so I only remember the detail about the plane going down in the Atlantic Ocean. Sad, event.

The cubbard was not bare for Stovall. His '82 team was kick arse. Several seniors were drafted, and they were incoming frosh in '78 or '79 depending if they redshirted (James Britt, Mike Turner).

Carruth ended up playing for Bama - was one of the 6 that carried bryant to his grave.

I have the Tiger Rag Vol. 2, No. 21,Jan. 19, 1980. On the cover is a picture of Bo Rein and Jerry Stovall. LSU Football Coach, Nov. 30,1979- Jan. 10, 1980.(Bo REIN) Jerry Stovall LSU Football Coach, Named Jan. 12, 1980. Doesn't seem like its been that long. I remember how excited the LSU fans were at that time as they decribed him as having the look of an eagle. The last player he visited, Bobby Agnor, expressed how impressed he was with the new Tiger mentor. The two biggest recruits that Rein was after were McComb,Miss., star running back Paul Carruth and Baton Rouge's Billy Cannon Jr. And the irony of it all. The weird death flight that carried Rein back to North Carolina, almost directly over his old home in Cary and former school in Raleigh. And the last two letters of the plane were NC. And the fact that Governor Edwards made it,leaving 20 minutes later in a less equipped plane.

I couldn' agree more. The Tiger Nation was extreamly excited and knew he was going to be the coach to bring us to a National Championship. I remember it well. R.I.P.

That was a truly unpredictable offense in 82 thanks to OC/QB coach Mack Brown. (Having Risher, Hilliard, James and Martin didn't hurt) Brown only stayed that one season and left to be head coach at Appalachian.State, a loss that Jerry couldn't overcome.....

Right on. Brown was (and is) a great coach.

Tragic plane crash and death of LSU Coach Bo Rein

Remember hearing the news as an LSU student--sickening.

IMHO, Bo Rein would have woken up the sleeping giant that was LSU football. Might even have retired as the most successful HC in school history.

RIP, Bo.

Rein would have had LSU in contention for a NC in short order. He was a great up and coming young coach. They said he had the eye of the eagle. His death changed the course of LSU football for the worse for two decades.

And the legend continues. It is a real tragedy, and who knows what Rein would have done at LSU. But the above statement is just silly.
