Well what would you have them do ? what they been doing AIN'T WORKING BRO. Fla is going to run right at us and if Chavis doesn't try different formations they will not be able to stop them. Get your head out your arse!!

Not your Daddy's 5-2 Monster.

MHR University 5-2 Breakdown

Anyway, more and more NFL teams are using the modernized 5-2 concepts in their defenses. It is really a variant of the present day 3-4 with some interest twist.

I can see LSU talent fitting the modern 5-2 in many situations.

The 5-2 Demands Two Quality Man-Coverage Corners and Two Quality Zone Coverage Safeties

The one aspect of the nature of the 5-2 is that the corners are designed to play tight man-to-man coverage, this is because there are only four defensive backs on the field. Normally there are two corners and two safeties, there are variants that rely on three corners and one safety.

This allows the team which is deeper at corner than safety to offset that weakness and still be able to combat the spread offense. This formation tends to not rely on zone coverage from linebackers and defensive ends, at least not pre-snap though those positions can adjust depending on how the play develops or if the field caller (MLB or S) decides to change things up.

Since the modern 5-2 largely eliminates the need for run defense from the safeties they are regulated zone coverage. This requires the team to have more safeties that are better in coverage, or what most coordinators see as free safeties.

This could be effective against an offense like Floridas-- one with weak passing offense

Worried about the safeties in this scheme. I think it's a good plan. We shall see.

Yep and the Florida O-line is not not considered a good pass blocking team.

This guy gets it.

You can't say you hate the 5-2 and love the 3-4 because they are pretty much the same.

We would be burned in the passing game if we went with a 5-2.

It's too risky, if the RB gets past the line, there isn't much help beyond that.

Florida can't throw it brah.

In all seriousness. I think the OP is talking about in obvious running situations.

Obviously we would be in nickel for the majority of the time

5-2 does not necessarily mean 5 DL-men. Two wide ends could be call outside LB.

Don't get caught up in the numbers.

Exactly. The 5-2 is schematically similar to the 3-4 (although obviously different teams might run it differently). It's not like a goal line set.

If they run a 5-2 and the DE's allow anyone to get outside then that coach needs to be fired. The whole defense is about containment. Unfortunately, you need two stud LB's to plug holes and make sure tackles.

Exactly, it's really close to a 3-4. This was the prominent defense used against the option oriented offenses of the 70s and 80s. It' the defense we ran in Highschool (graduated in 85). The ends were essentialy outside line backers that stood up.

If the defense does not step up we will lose. Did any one watch Moo St. game last week? I know the reason we are so bad on defense but sooner or later we are going to have pick it up. I just hope Mett. & company can continue the offense blitz!

We put 5 men on the line to contain Manziel last year. Made a solid pocket around him and made him throw it.

They aren't all down with hands in the dirt and they alternate dropping back at the last minute to keep offense guessing.

I'm all for it if it means we stop their running game. Tigers roll by 14+ if we make Florida try and beat us with the pro-style pass.

Somebody get Jerry Claiborne on the phone and resurrect the wide tackle six!

As someone said their are minimal differences between the 3-4 and 5-2...more semantics than anything.

The one thing I said after the UGA game that I think still applies....if you're rushing 4 and playing coverage and the guys are still getting open, then start bringing the house and only play 4-5 in coverage.

Means DBS dont have to cover as long or think as much. Even if you don't get the sack you'll force rushed throws that result in incompletions. Your gonna get burned sometimes....but we were getting burned playing coverage

With our secondary play we need to either

1. Get to the quarterback as soon as possible or
2. Put as many DBs on the field as possible and double cover some guys.

I agree with anything that brings more pressure, creates rushed throws, possible sacks & turnovers.

Defense may get beat with a big play from time-to-time, but I'm of the opinion that the worst thing for LSU is long, sustained drives by FLA since it keeps our offense off the field for potential scoring drives of its own, plus wears down the LSU Defense for the next defensive series and late in the game.....better to give up a TD or two on short time-of-possessions - in return, we can get a couple of turnovers and/or 3rd and longs due to sacks and incompletions....much like FLA will do to us, force the QB to make a play under pressure.
