Our hard luck coach:

Brenie Moore

Lost out on a Rose Bowl trip due to a 5 yard offside penalty vs Rice.

Recruited the best Qb in the nation, only to have him in the dog house for drinking and fighting for his time at LSU.

1943 was going to be LSU's year, everything was in place and WWII takes all the team but Van Buren and Joe Nagato (the only Japanese American playing football in WWII).

1947 The most talented LSU all time todate, injuries wipe out the back field even before the season started, YA gets hurt in game 2 and plays hurt the rest of the season. LSU would be down to it's 4th deep at RB by mid season.

At least history remembers him well.

And for those who don't know, only 4 SEC teams played that year: LSU, Tulane, UGA, & GT. Thus, only Georgia can say that they have played as many football seasons in the SEC as LSU has.

I find this one kind of interesting...

Maybe not as good as his brother, but still.

Have enjoyed reading this thread more than any in a long time. Great thread and and great jnformation about our Tigers.

Mack Brown was Jerry Stovall's QB coach the year that LSU beat Bama 20-10 at Bama and eventually caused Coach Bear Btyant to say that was the worst beating that this team has taken in all his years of Coaching at Bama. He retired after the last game that year and died 2 weeks later.

Watts was solid but not great.

Carl Reese was sort of a flake DC. For every gem he gave us there were just as many face-plants. Not in Saban's, Muschamp's, Pelini's class.

Nick Saban

Paul Dietzel

Most will likely vote for Charles McClendon, Bernie Moore and Bill Arnsparger.

You're forgetting someone.

Dinardo?

Yeah all that elite talent that he was handed was hell to deal with. But in true Miles fashion he has lowered expectations and the talent level. Da hat!

Dinardo one of the top 10 LSU coaches of all time?

I would think not, when you have Pritchard, McDonald, Donahue not listed above.

When you talk the other side of the list, the top bad coaches:

Hallman far ahead of that list

Mayhew (was an All America, but not really a coach, he can't be blamed much as he was hired as an assistant and got the head job when Pritchard resigned).

Sutton

Dinardo is a lower middle of the pack when talking coaching all time at LSU.

Katrina was horrific. We had a great year. Saban would have melted down under that environment probably losing several more games.

Opinion

quote:

Living in the shadow of a predecessor. Much worse than living in the shadow of a dead man. Miles actually has to coach against his predecessor every year.

You could just as easily say it gives him an opportunity to shut-up his critics and beat his predecessor, can't play a dead man.

quote:

Walking away from your dream job. More to overcome than we realize despite the financial rewards.

If it's that hard for him to overcome then he should have gone.

Maintaining a program for more than 3 years is much more difficult than turning it around. Ask Bobby Bowden.

Maybe at a state like FL where you have three other powerhouses but Bobblehead dolls should be able to maintain programs at LSU given our facilities, fan support, traditions and recruiting territory.

Back in the late 60's early 70's I got to meet and know Craig Randall who was a line coach. Craig was a great guy who recruited North Louisiana. He had a degree in history and could talk all night about the subject.

Let's not be so harsh on Miles. We all need to realize that our program is currently in the best shape in its history.
After the 03 BCSNC, did anyone of us realistically expect another so quickly? We were the 1st school with 2 BCSNCs. Pretty incredible considering we had none since '59.
Maybe we are getting spoiled like Cowboy fans?
