I saw the Cotton Bowel in Dallas, LSU 14 Arkansas 7 (1966??) as a 11 year old and have bled and breathed LSU sports since. All you suckers... in the late 70's, it was painful to be a Tiger fan.. We got the hurt put on us in every sport. It was bad. Real bad. Now to have been a fan and not jump ship, that speaks a lot. Call me Yoda instead of Hitman202.

Hitman......my first memory of LSU Football on TV. Joe Labruzzo, in perhaps his greatest game as a Tiger, took over in the 2nd half, and did not fumble. What an upset. There is a classic picture of McCledon being mobbed by the team right after the game. The other running back, Jim Dousay, had a good game too. Remember the small nose tackle or, middle guard in those days, Mike Duhon. That was a great game and gutsy team.

LSU79 when was that? My second "live" game was 1973,my freshman year. At home we opened up with Colorado, who was number four pre-season. (An aside... I saw Colorado earlier..forget where... when four cheerleaders led the smaller version of a real buffalo on the field.. thru the goalposts. Each had a lease attached to a saddle on the animals back. Somehow as they ran onto the field, the first two escorts stumbled, fell, and lost hold of their leases. Needless to say the remaining two could not control the beast.. now not so little it seems... and drug them, on their bellies, down the girdiron. It was an experience.) They supposedly had a great team and strutted (without an animal this time) onto the field like they owned the place. Mike Miley, first start at QB, dominated and with TB Brad Davis, won an exciting close game. The crowd stayed in the stands for an hour after the game, screaming their heads off. I decided I had found a home.

That was the Cotton Bowl in 1966, the game you were discussing. I was at the Colorado game also, although I did not start LSU until the following year. Fortunately, I was able to attend many of the games 66-69, and most of the games in the early 70's before I attended LSU. Everyone remembers Miley leaving and "you'll notice" Carl Otis Trimble taking his place for the 1974 season. He opened up against Colorado (I believe) also and we crushed them. Do you remember the QB from Jennings that took over for Trimble in '74, Billy "pop a top" Broussard.

Nope. Billy Cannon. Big guy (215 lbs) who ran track (4.5 - 40) and played danm near every position on the football field. Cannon scored everyway you can score in the game of football (running, receiving, passing, kicking, interceptions and fumble recovery

You did not mention that Cannon also was a great DB. Look at the goal line stop in the 58 Oily Misses game.

Ran back punts and KO
Kicked FG's and PAT's
Punted
Played DB
Threw a TD pass in the Sugar Bowl
Great receiver ( converted to AllPro TE after injuries as RB for the Raiders)
SEC sprinter champ and top shot putter.( Think about Ricky Jean pulling that off, or X-man tossing the shot not to mention all of his other accomplishments.
Add everything up and there is NO contest. Let's talk about the distant No2. Miley, IMHO.

His conviction has stained his image and hampers talk about him, but that should not take away from his talents and HIGH level of accomplishments at WHATEVER he tried.

Na, the old days weren't better, just different. There weren't as many good athletes, as there are now, but the great ones seemed to have more balanced lives and more mature (not Pistol, though.) The problem with the younger fans is they don't have the ability to judge the present great athletes with those 1-2-3 (4-5-6) decades ago. Shaq versus Pistol. A Reggie Bush versus Billy Cannon. Sports today is more fun than it was 40 years ago with the greater TV and newspaper coverage. But guys like Tommy Casonova, Mike Miley, and Billy Cannon, no present-day LSU athlete even comes close to these guys. You just don't know because you were not alive (maybe your parents weren't even alive.) Great coversation and always remember, just a opinion.
