I suppose he was overrated by every scout, gm, and coach in the NFL as well when everyone decided he was the top DB in the draft when he went..
Exactly people use his getting beat in the nfl to downplay his coverage skills at LSU. While not mentioning that he was a strong safety playing free safety. He wasnt bad in coverage at LSU.

He is definitely a freak athlete. But he was a liability in coverage. That isn't top safety material. Sure he can hit hard and he was good in run support. I just think cover and ball skills are more important.
Not at LSU. It's just not true. In the nfl yes. Not at LSU. He was seen as the full package coming out of LSU. He could cover , help in run support, and hit. That's why he was one of the highest drafted safeties of all time

Mark Roman was pretty solid. May not be the best but definitely deserves honorable mention.
Anthony Marshall was always a personal fav.

quote:I still think you are projecting some of his shortcomings in the NFL into your memory of him as a college player. His cover and ball skills were perfectly fine for a college safety. I remember him running stride for stride and knocking a pass away from Devin Hester in the 2005 Peach Bowl. You don't wind up third all-time in interceptions and passes defended with substandard ball skills.

Yeah, im probably over stating his short comings. But for the sake of this thread, I'm going to go with Clark as the best.

This 'debate' over Laron is crazy. That cat was one hell of a safety at LSU. Easily in the conversation for the best.

Eric Reid will be among these guys

Chad Jones is far far behind Casanova, Steltz, and Ryan Clark at this point

Ryan Clark got burned up and down the field under Saban. Just because he has had a solid NFL career, doesn't re-write his college career.

Greg Jackson > LL & CJ
Was more inline with CJ, but the guy made zero mistakes.

Exactly. Posters are using the players NFL career against them while they were at LSU.Ryan Clark wasn't grey at LSU and Laron could Definately cover at LSU. You think teams draft a safety(LL) at the #6 overall pick if he couldn't cover while in college? Almost all of LL career in the NFL, he has played out of position.

Ryan Clark has had the best NFL career. Laron had the best college career. Tommy Casanova was 1 of the best we have had.
Laron has the physical tools. Clark was a little smaller but had the coverage skills and the mental aspect of the game. I think that Eric Reid is a blend of both Laron and Clark. I dont think you can label 1 as the best. We have had a lot of great DBs at LSU. The only DB position that we really can label 1 player as the "best" would be at CB with PP7. But at safety, too close to call. But, i think Reid has a chance to be the best in a few years if he has a good NFL career, which i think he will.
