For the old-timers on here, do you know the story about Cannon originally not wanting to go to LSU but wanting to go to Florida instead?
I'm an old timer - saw Cannon play in high school - and never heard that. There was some talk that he had considered Ole Miss, but this is the first time I've ever heard that he considered Florida.
In Peter Finney's The Fighting Tigers, Seventy-five Years of LSU Football:
quote:
"Less known is the fact that, had it not been for World War II, Cannon undoubtedly would have played his college football at Ole Miss. Billy was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi, an Ole Miss hotbed, in 1937, but when he was five the family moved to Baton Rouge, where his dad took a war defense job.
. . .
"' I always wanted to go to LSU,' he said the day Dietzel beat a raft of other schools battling for his services."

Ole Miss would have been a powerhouse.

BlueRidge,
If you don't mind, send me your email address and I'll let in on what I know from someone that was invloved with his recruitment back in the day.

The 61 Tigers were one of the best teams ever, finishing #4 and man-handling the Big8 Champ in the Orange Bowl.
Led by another great Tiger, Jerry Stovall, the forgotten one. Jerry was much like Billy as far as playing both O and D, punting, returner, selling programs etc. He was the Heisman runner-up. I think he was robbed, due to coming so soon after Cannon.
The thread title is "Billy Cannon Punt Return", not "Cannon the Citizen". All of the positive accolades are right on.
I could be wrong, but as a star on the Tiger track team, his 100 yd time was 9.5, maybe 9.4(world record at the time was 9.3). He also won many meets in the shot putt.
Many older fans are/were bitter because he got the spotlight put on LSU, both good and bad.
