Your making a general statement about something you dont have a clue. I can give you a list of people that have grabbed a face mask, kicked some butt, hit you in the helmet with his whistle, etc. that could teach and coach. One example for reflection: Vince Lombardi. Nobody said anything about relying on it. Just another useful motivational tool used less and less because of the pussification process.

dont forget, a tail chewing may perform multiple functions for a young kid. First, the kid may be so frustraited with his performance, he may shut down mentally after multiple failures. The arse chewing by the coach turns the focus from the failures, to the coach and his intensity. It kinda helps a frustrated player "reboot". I experienced this quite a few times in high school football.

The main thing is for the coach to be authentic. People tire/get used to a constant screamer/yeller and it becomes ineffective. However, if the coach has taught the player the play, and seen the player recognize and understand the play on numerous occasions in previous practices, it is understandable for the coach to go volcanic if the player "forgets" where to line up or what route to run or what a certain hand signal is. This is called getting someone's undivided attention. Usually, it's not the verbal arse chewing that motivates, it's humiliation in front of the player's peers and a desire to do better that motivate. These players want to do well because they want to play. They realize if they screw up that there's others behind them who will be playing while they're sitting on the bench.
All of this hinges on if it is a genuine reaction by the coach and not a contrived public performance. Good coaches then follow up with the person later in a more measured fashion and make sure that learning is taking place. That's what I hear is the kind of coach Gonzo is. They "atta boy" good work habits and good play and they jump on players who may not be focusing on what they're doing or putting in the effort to run plays correctly.

It's used less cause most of today's coaches see it for what it is...an outdated tool having little to no positive impact.
Humiliating a player in public by yanking on his grill like he's a dog on a lead gains a coach no special respect and doesn't teach the player anything other than his coach can play the part of a jerk, but if you like it...knock yourself out.

What happens in a practice is one thing and what happens in a public game is another.
Players expect, or should, to have a coach jump them in some way if they keep making the same mistakes in practice. Different animal in my book when you take it public as in front of 90,000+ and national TV.
But hey, different strokes for different folks.

The point is: there are different ways to skin a cat. If a coach puts his arm around an ol for jumping the count in practice on a daily basis, as well as games, over and over and he still jumps the count... It's time to try a different type of motivation. It is time for that coach to grab his attention, anyway possible... You know why, cause it has and will continue to affect the lives of everyone associated with that TEAM..

Many of these guys have been the best player on their team since they were 10 years old, probably never had anyone in their face.
Some of them need it from time to time.

Why can't you curse more?

So because a coach berated a player on the side lines, you think he's awesome? Why not have someone bitch at him for obviously not knowing how to coach players to catch a friggin football.
Gonzales is one of the most overhyped assistant coach hires in all of college football history. Dude is living off Percy Harvin who did more from the RB position in college than at WR.
What I want to see is Les yelling at his coaches for sucking arse. Firing coaches that don't carry their weight like Crowton and Studs. Instead, they get raises. Yelling doesn't make up for shitting coaching skills.
That said, I really hope the coaches turn things around.

that's the key, the affect of negative reinforcement diminishes if it is used too often, and doesn't really change behavior over the long-term. but there are some cases where you have to get a players attention.

The people on here that disagree with the in your face attitude are probably the same people that never wipp their kids arse when they need it. They think a good talking to is good enough and are out of touch with reality. What I see when I see a coach chewing a player out is accountability, something this team has lacked in. If I recall correctly old Nicky S. has done well holding his players accountable and the ones that whin about it, he usually gets rid of. Refer back to the 2008 season.

all this BS about miles and accountability and shite... makes me need to share something I noticed the second time I watched the sping game.
That has been a big issue the last two years. Pellini demanded it, though I often had issues with his defensive gameplans one could never question that he demanded respect and received it. Same with Fisher IMO.
We lost it in recent years and you know how they say the first step is admitting you have a problem. Les's hiring of Gonzo IMHO is that.
But as I've said before, ultimatley that kind of demand for accountability really has to come from the top.

yes it does, and hopefully you won't feel too bad when you finally discover it...

no one "demands" respect and gets it. You earn respect through your actions. every one I've ever known that tried to "demand" respect was laughed at mercilessly behind their back.

that is what makes a program better. the asst. coaches are the coaches with the players they are the ones who prepare the kids to get ready for the games. we all know head coaches are only as good as his players. and now of days it is head coaches are as good as his def/offensive coordinaters.
