Burrow has been very careful with the ball overall so far this year. That's why he hasn't thrown a pick. And, to be clear, winning the turnover battles has been key to our wins over both Miami and Auburn.
But, down by eight in the 4th quarter, it was time to take chances. That's what I like about Burrow and Ensminger so far: they are making smart decisions.
One of the best things about Les Miles was that he understood the importance of not turning the ball over. We won a lot of games in the Miles era just by remembering that we have a great defense, and we usually don't have to take a lot of unnecessary risks.
Ensminger has taken the key part of that philosophy, which is part of why Burrow's completion percentage is so low: he isn't forcing the ball and is willing to throw it away if the play isn't there. But Ensminger is opening things up at times and especially when necessary. And it was absolutely necessary in that situation.
