Did YOU know that between 1991 and 2001 there were 17 players killed by batted balls?

The problem is that it is all about perceived risk versus actual risk. While I don't want to hear about anyone dyeing or becoming injured while playing a sport; accidents do happen in many sports. Football players become paralyzed when they lead with their head, NASCAR drivers crash and die, and sometimes baseballs hit players. Part of that comes with the game. However, 30-40 thousand americans die in automobile accidents every year, but I don't see everyone riding on bicycles. However, in all of these cases manufactures of various safety equipment involved try to find improvements. Now going back to my original point, I don't know that 17 players in 10 years is even statistically significant when you look at the total number of games played in the US in that amount of time. Nevertheless, as long as the NCAA actually has the players best interest involved then I have no complaints.

I don't hate MLB, but don't have the passion for it like college baseball. It is not because of the bats though. It is because of the huge salaries, free agency, etc and all that goes with that stuff.

kige that. When the baseball union caused the World Series to be canceled, I lost interest in it.

Sure,if you're that dense.
He asked you to provide info on the danger of metal bats for college baseball and you answered with a link about softball.

Can you please answer his question now?

The USA Today article goes into more detail. Yes, y'all will point out the numbers are low. But, obviously they are doing more research into the issue.

Absolutely. Unions in general piss me off, but that is a topic for the Poli board.

FWIW, I am hearing great things about our baseball team and I have a good feeling about next year. All good except for having to pay for my tickets by 10/31! Let's have a beer before a game next season.

did you read the usa today article? you probably didnt, so let me point out a couple quotes

quote:

Sandberg and Schlesner think the number of these incidents has increased in recent years, though it's hard to find reliable statistics to confirm that notion,

quote:

According to data collected by Fred Mueller of the National Center for Catastrophic Injury Research, whose annual report covers only high school and college sports, there were 52 catastrophic injuries in baseball from 1983 to 2009, with three of them occurring last year. By comparison, there were 43 in football in 2008. The report defines "catastrophic" as any injury involving a fatality or permanent or temporary severe functional disability. "There's really no good data out there to tell you the metal bats are the cause of these injuries," says Mueller, adding the numbers have remained steady over the report's 27 years.

can we end this now?

No you did.
Yes, I did. You said there aren't 'thousands of college baseball pitchers.'

You're wrong. You can deny you're wrong, but that would just make you wrong twice instead of once.
quote:

That's like talking about Running Back injuries and counting red shirts and back-ups who don't get in the game.

Obviously it's been a long time since you actually attended a weekend college baseball series. On any typical weekend, LSU will use 8-10 pitchers. Then 5 or 6 other pitchers will pitch in weeknight games. I was underestimating the 12 pitchers per teams just so you couldn't argue about that low number.

I remember when I played little league in the 90's and some kid died because he opened up to a pitch and was hit in the chest. The league started making us wear heart guards. When I was in HS I had a kid on my team that did the same thing, only he was hit in the nuts...twice. The league didn't make everyone start wearing cups. Perhaps they were practicing systematic sterilization for moronic players.

Why do you keep referring to the safety of college players and then you post quotes referring to high school?
Cause you kept responding. You do know the rubber already WAS at 43 in college right? The aluminum bat safety entered. If they're not safe in HS or in the Pro's why would they be in college?

quote:

NCAA researchers who have examined the "exit speed" of balls offwood and aluminum bats find a wide variety depending on the grade
of aluminum bat, the speed of the pitch and the point of impacton the bat. But they agree that aluminum bats hit the ball harder more often. They've also found that aluminum bats become more potent with use as the metal develops more spring.

"What you find is you are naive about what a bat is doing," said Wally Renfro, an NCAA spokesman. "There is a whole lot more going on than you thought."

Though the risk of aluminum bats has yet to be quantified, there is anecdotal evidence that balls struck by high-performance bats do hit more pitchers and cause greater damage.

Injuries cause concern

Two college pitchers were hit in the face in three days during the NCAA regional playoffs last month in Minnesota. Both pitchers, one from the University of Nebraska, the other from Butler University, suffered broken jaws. The Nebraska' pitcher's injury required the insertion of a titanium plate.

You want to refute all these cases?

But I don't recall an epidemic of injuries from using the previous metal bats

I used to coach college baseball at a DII school and my first game as a head coach in 2003, my number one guy took a line drive off the forehead first at bat of the game. The sound and damage it did is something I will unfortunately never forget. I was always against changing the college game but have to say, after that, I was behind changing the bats. Kid had skull fractures and almost didnt make it. It may change the game but I would rather that than seeing a kid go through that

From that link you gave:

there are no hard data linking metal bats to an increase in injuries

Why not make the baseballs softer? We could play with wiffle balls, right?

Can you complete a sentence without being a smartass? I saw that in there. Maybe there were more in the beginning of 2010. The unregulated bats are hotter than ever. But I guess the NCAA just made up the rule for the hell of it.
