if thinking that it's this close to draft day, and they don't want to release any info.

i'm thinking it's much more serious than what we are being told.

stable doesn't really mean anything.

just that he can breath, has a airway, and has circulation.

hipaa prevents info from being released.

when I worked in the ICU, PACU, and Med Surg, we'd say stable all the time to people.

they could call the patient directly, and ask them though.

but i'm guessing his mom doesn't want to put out any info that could affect his draft status.

well, from working in hospitals, I know that high-status individuals do get special treatment.

but I suspect his injuries could be pretty severe.

Your post on the situation sounds a lot like what Coach McCarthy described in his quotes. Do you have any updates??

"I've suspected things have been worse...no one stays in the intensive care unit for "bumps and bruises".

Anytime you have what is or could be deemed a serious head injury, they put you in ICU. I fractured my skull playing, of all things, flag football in college. I was in ICU for two days. It's a precautionary step. I was far from dying (even though I felt like I was) but the doctor explained to me that constant monitoring (INTENSIVE care) was needed.

I cant give details at this moment,

So, this isn't a new update? All I've seen in this thread is the stuff on the news wires, not exactly insider information. And none of which was posted by the OP?!?

People need to stop with the rampant speculation.

Here is waht I can say about head injuries in general based on my experiences and education. (I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in Neuropsychology and regularly evaluate individuals with brain injuries, strokes, dementia, etc.) Even if he did sustain a head injury from the accident it wouldn't necessarily preclude him from playing football or leading a productive life. All that is needed to meet criteria for a mild brain injury is a momentary alteration of consciousness and recovery from such injuries is often fairly quick. Even with a more severe injury outcomes can vary greatly as no two head injuries are the same. Individual factors can play a large role in how someone recovers from an injury, with some people making full recoveries and others not. A strong work ethic, which he obviously has if he is a high performing athlete, and a strong social support system are factors to his advantage. Best of luck to him and I hope it is nothing serious, but even if it is serious it doesn't mean his recovery won't be good.

cord1231,

i know that your intentions are good by asking for prayers and stuff, but you starting a thread that states i cant release any details makes everyone assume the worst because if it was just bumps and bruises it wouldnt matter cause the injuries would be minor

If you think Tommy Moffit is going to sing someone's praises for having simply a "strong" work ethic, I believe you seriously misunderstand Coach Moffit. The comments that college coaches and analysts throw around are relative ones. When an elite-level college football player (e.g., a starter for a National Championship team), is described as having a "weak" work ethic by analysts or coaches, that means he likely only works harder than about 95% of the people in the world. His work ethic would be labeled "weak" in that context because athletes at that level are expected to work harder than about 99.9% of the people in the world, if not more. If there have been more than a dozen starters on National Championship teams in the last 20 years who did not devote more time per year to their football careers (including practice, tape sessions, workouts, schoolwork, weightlifting, rehabbing, etc.) than 90% of the people in the world spend each year on their careers, I would be surprised.

I have complete confidence that Demetrius will put forth one of the most outstanding efforts in rehabilitation and recovery that his medical staff will have ever seen.

This thread is not the place to be argueing about this, but look at the context of the statement in my OP and what your response implies about Byrd, then think about it. You may not have meant it as a "cheap shot", but you should be able to see how it can come across that way to others (also see the other response you got to your post).

I'm having trouble understanding why there is no full disclosure of his condition. People claim to have inside info, then make dramatic statements on this board. I believe most of us are concerned about his well being first and foremost and about his NFL prospects secondarily. I can't understand why no one can be forthcoming about the condition, which I hope and pray is very good.
