Punting and Missed Tackles were the biggest problems I saw.
Poor punting actually kept Wash. in the game during the second half. We were stopping Wash., but they were still pinning us deep because of field position. Our punter never changed the field position for us. Let's hope he improves.

The first half, we missed a ton of tackles. Being the 1st game, hopefully this gets worked out in a hurry.

So what are you trying to say?

Jake Locker had a good game, now people are saying in various threads.

"Second Best QB LSU will face"
"Could be dark horse Heisman"
"Will lead Washington to 7-10 wins"

Just because he had a good game does not mean he will have a good year. Hell the LSU secondary last year was the weakest area on defense. It just looks like any decent QB will be able to own them yet again.

For the people claiming 1 game for LSU defense, also need to claim its only been 1 game for Locker and Washington. If they finish 3/4 wins will LSU fans still praise them and Locker?

Tulane played us tough for 3 quarters in 2007 and we did not praise them the way we are Washington. Some teams just get up for certain games and this may have been Washington's time to shine.

Tebow and Sneed, better than Locker, yes. McElroy can't carry Locker's jock at this point.

no doubt.

If Locker goes 11-27 for 117 yards next week vs Idaho are LSU fans still going to build a shrine for his play against LSU?

that is a big IF.

Totally agree. I'm very concerned with the punt game. IMO the defense will be fine in time.

Although tackling was a big problem on defense, tackling is the easiest defensive problem to fix. Tackle better, and I think we win the UW game by 10-20pts.

Couldn't agree more on tackling. I expect it to be much improved this week.

Yeah, the punting game has always scared me ever since we implemented punt ugly, but all teams seem to be going to that nowadays.

More so than the punt protection, I'm very worried that we don't have a punter on roster. Maybe they'll prove me wrong, but if the UW game was any indication, field position is going to be a constant struggle for us this year.

LSU blitz quite a bit in the first series, but after they got burned on a screen pass the blitzing pretty much stopped. You need to blitz during unexpecting situaions.

Although I agree we should never abandon the blitz after getting burned once, I don't think we did in this game. We didn't completely abandon the blitz like some have stated.

Maybe some of the team underestimated the prep time , travel time and how late the game actually was(PST)and didn't get enough rest or sleep. It was the longest trip in LSU's history. It did seem like some of those mis-tackles were aimed for the ground

I saw another poster say this, but when Jefferson started the Chickfila bowl, did Crowton and Les hold him back?

Did he throw 15+ yards down the field in that game?

Chicken Good point but i think they cut him loose in a game were there was no hostle crowd and there was nothing after that! If he made some mistakes and lost confrdence they had all offseason to build it back. The last thing we need is for JJ to lose confidence in week one with 11 games to go. I think thats whay they held back a little. I really think we will see a little more this week and against ULL and then we should start going down field more. IMOP

I was at the game also and your summary is the most rational and right on of all I have read thus far. One thing you touched on that I haven't seen in other summaries is the lack of penalties. I thought this team seemed disciplined and more organized than last year. In spite of the running around and signaling on both sides of the ball, by the time the ball was snapped, players seemed to be in position and know what to do (with a few exceptions).

"It was obvious towards the end of the season that Les pulled in Crowton's reigns out of fear of putting too much on JJ and potentially scarring him like Lee. "

Seemed obvious to me that the coaches avoided having Jefferson throw over the middle...

The play of Chad Jones leaves a lot to be desired at this point.

These 2 along with our punting average of 32.0 ypp were the only 3 issues I had with the game.

Yes the pass interference call was garbage but they also let CJ get away with one that possibly cost them points at a critical time in the game.

PAC 10 refs >>>>> SEC refs.

Not sure what game you were watching but it was very good and a huge improvement over anything we've had recently.

Yeah, for the first time in a long time, the LSU LBs actually made a significant impact in the game. I was pleased with their performance.

You do know thats not a good thing when a secondary player is the one making tackles everywhere, right?

Actually, it's very common for someone in the secondary to lead the team in tackles. Granted, that is usually a safety and not a corner, though.
