I agree with you. I think it sucks when they offer a kid a scholarship and then try to renege on it at NSD. This deal with Porter is really embarrassing.
It's not just LSU/Les Miles doing this, but that doesn't it right.

They just told him numbers are tight, in January as we promised you'll have your full ride. They're delaying the kids scholarship.. by 4 full months. Not a big deal IMO.

however you slice it, its the staff's fault since they signed 27 (over the limit) to start with. no they don't know if everyone will qualify but they created the problem and its their job to manage the schollies properly.
What if 7 of those guys didn't qualify. We had quite a few academic risks this last class.. it's a miracle they all qualified.
If we take a class of 20.. ouch. A team that desperately needs depth can't afford a mistake like that. That mistake would have been far far worse than what we're seeing now with Porter.

If you only end up with 20, you take 25 this class and force less attrition next year which we'll have to do just to get enough spots for the 16 commits for this year we have now. You act like not signing 25 in a year is horrific, yet we signed 13 in 2005 and will sign less than 25 this year. You're focus on losing all 7 another stupid one. Not all 7 were likely to not qualify. 7 were questionable. Likely at worst it was a 50/50 shot for each on average. That means you get (with rounding down for you) at least 3 of 7. That's still 21 kids in this class.
You just want to defend the bush league stuff that you all bitch at Bama/Saban for doing because its LSU and Miles.

This is unfortunate, but I believe it's being blown way out of proportion. From reading everything it sounds like Miles told him months ago that in the highly unlikely that all our recruits got accepted that Porter would instead be offered a grey shirt. At that time Porter said that in that case he'd quit. It seemed unlikely enough that neither worried about it too much, and moved on assuming it wouldn't happen. Well the unlikely happened, and unfortunately it happened at the last minute. So Miles told Porter he'd only be able to get a grey shirt, and Porter quit. That sounds to me like everyone did just what they said they were going to do. If this is indeed what happened, why the hell is everyone acting outraged?

Is there a reason you are cutting and pasting your exact response from the rant on here?
If he said he wouldn't do it back then, Miles owed it to the kid to tell him that he still planned on greyshirting him if this scenario played out. Instead, it seems he didn't and the kid feels lied to.

It actually is a big deal when you look at it from Porter's point of view. Out of 26 other freshmen, they chose him to wait until next season. It's a huge slap in the face.

What are you talking about man? Its just 5 months. It's only $4000 to $5000 out of his pocket if he takes 11 hours! It's a great opportunity. Other people work and pay for school, why can't he!

If he knew he was going to have to pay tuition in the Fall, maybe he would have had a paying job this summer, instead of being on an extended tryout for the Tigers.

He doesn't have to take courses at all if he doesn't want to or can't afford it. Just wait patiently for 5 months. Big freaking deal.
What Miles did was hardly the villainous act it's being made out to be. Pay attention.. the most vocal people on this issue are all severely anti-miles. I consider Miles a mediocre coach.. but damn, the dude catches an unfair amount of shite even when he has done nothing wrong (like now).

But it IS a big deal. He could have been on scholarship somewhere else, instead he's left to figure out his best option with just a couple of weeks before classes start.

At least in my case, whoever coaching is the least of my concerns. If _______ was the LSU head coach, I would feel the exact same on this issue.

He has absolutely done something wrong. He promised a high school kid (who had quite a few other scholarship offers) a scholarship, then in August....A full 7 months after signing day, told him "sorry....we're full."

There's a difference between cutting someone completely and offering a greyshirt.

Lots of teams grey shirt but it seems most plan for it and let the athlete know where they stand ahead of time. Telling a kid that just moved in the dorm that he has to move out and find his own means for the up coming semester in the next week is not fair. If someone could link a story where this has happened anywhere else I'd like to see it.
All of this could have been avoided had the staff talked to the questionable kids ahead of time and let them know that if everyone makes it so and so has to grey shirt etc... JMO

Question: If CLM has indeed given Porter an unconditional release...does that mean he can sign with anyone and play immediately?
as I understand it, no release is needed. By failing to fulfill the obligations of the LOI and scholarship offer, the LOI is null and void. He is a free man.

The whole point of him greyshirting is for him to not be enrolled this fall, so he won't qualify against this years class. They tell him, stay home on the Wank til January, then come on up. Its a pretty big change from being told to report in August with the rest of your class.

I'm sure that's true, but I believe the coaching staff has more pressing matters than coddling children and stroking egos. I like Porter's potential and hate to see him leave, but sometimes bad things happen to good people: it's how one deals with such adversity that gives insight into one's character.
Remember the old "There's no 'I' in 'TEAM'" adage? How did it get to be an "old adage?" It must contain some truth, correct? Well -- and no matter how bad he "been done wrong" -- it turns out that Mr. Porter isn't a team player. Unfortunate. Granted the situation is far from ideal, but don't we all suffer little bumps-in-the-road on our way to adulthood? The net-net of this is that Porter was asked to wait; rather than waiting he quit; and (here's the real tragedy of this situation) some "enlightened" posters on this board defend his feckless and purile actions in the holy-names of "self-esteem," "respect" and "dignity." It only adds fuel to the fire and gives credence to the tantrums of children.
Some kids do whatever it takes to go to school, regardless of the adversity. Some athletes do whatever it takes to help the team win, even at the expense of their individual glory. Sadly, those folks are becoming fewer and farther between because the modern-day mantra is ME, ME, ME! Have you ever taught a class at LSU? Ever tutored athletes at the Cox Center? I have; and there are some (certainly not all, but some) attitudes out there that will turn your stomach. I'm sorry this happened to Elliot, but I still think he handled it poorly.
