Now, you are changing the premise. The OP was about to WHOM one lost and WHO one beat. Not about the quality of play.
OF COURSE, you evaluate the quality of a team by their quality of play. Duh

but its hard to really tell if LSU is the 4th best team or 20th best team in the country.

any coach on any team in any league will take a 1 point win over their opponent, no matter who the opponent is, the level of competition. weekend and week out, etc.

The same Oregon team everyone was saying was the best team in the country because they beat an overrated USC team? The same "great" Oregon team which lost to Stanford this past weekend?
Boise plays 11 inferior opponents and maybe one solid team each year. Don't tell me Boise should even be in the BCS discussion.

Well what I actually said is that we are great. But I didn't panic when we almost lost to mediocre teams and I am not gonna call us the greatest thing since sliced bread for losing to two awesome teams.
Being 7-2 in the SEC is solid no matter what. LSU hasn't gotten the chance to beat top 15-20 type opponents, but it is just really hard to call this team "top 5" when they haven't beaten anyone near that caliber. But being top 10-15 isn't mediocre...its great.
