They're plaster, so pretty fragile. Most of them have likely been destroyed.

All the more reason to think twice before you give it to your nephew. It is so interesting to find out there is another one out there and that they were selling them at a game. I will tell my mom and see if she has more information about it. She was at that Halloween game, so it's possible she saw them at the time.

I have 3 mini helmets that are signed by Paul Dietzel, Nik Saban and Les Miles. Keep those on a small shelf along with replica of the national championship rings for 2003 and 2007

I searched for his name, and "Ben Day" didn't give me anything.

"Bennie Day," (+ LSU), the name etched into my older, fat player, however, revealed this article.

Louisiana State University vs. the University of Oklahoma has been a special match-up for the Day family for more than 50 years.

In 1949, Bennie Day completed a football-inspired diorama to honor his beloved LSU Tigers. Hand-carved football player figurines were set in a scene that depicted the LSU defense chasing the University of Kentucky offense.

In 1950, when LSU earned a trip to the Sugar Bowl, a new opponent stepped on the field or rather they were repainted in crimson and cream to commemorate the Tigers' game against OU.

"He never would have repainted those guys if he would have known LSU was going to lose 35 to nothing," Day's daughter, Sandra Aden, said.

Even though the art piece represented a disappointing loss by their father's favorite team, the Day children have held the piece dear for many years. When Bennie Day died in 1995, the family wanted to find a place for the public to view their father's creation.

In a coincidence that Aden calls "God's design," the piece is displayed in The Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans the city that is the site of Sunday's LSU-OU rematch.

It took three years for Day to complete all 96 figurines carved in balsa wood and spread over a 5-by-8-foot football field. In the piece, LSU tackle Ray Collins has OU quarterback Darrell Royal in his grasp. The frozen scene also features coaches, referees, cheerleaders and fans watching the game. Day also carved benches, water buckets, football equipment, megaphones and goalposts to complete the scene.

A resident of Baton Rouge, La., Day worked as a draftsman and carved figurines as a hobby. He was a lifelong LSU fan and attended many games as a boy. Day's father died while the two were attending an LSU game, Aden said.

The tragedy just increased Day's love for LSU, Aden said. During high school, he sold programs at the stadium so he could be close to the games.

Mary Beth Haskins, public information officer for the Ogden Museum, said the piece has received a great deal of attention since the announcement of the Sugar Bowl opponents.

"It's been amazing," Haskins said. "Folks are coming by because they have seen or heard about the piece. I think we'll see a lot more when more people start to come to town for the game."

The Ogden Museum is selling T-shirts with pictures of Day's piece to mark the return of LSU and OU to the Sugar Bowl.

Arless Day, Bennie Day's son, said the family is elated about the rematch.

"This is the game of our lifetime. I truly can't express it. It's magical. Long before any of these players were born, my family has been waiting for this game."

He said his father loved LSU football and would be extremely excited about the game.

"Everybody asks what he thought when Oklahoma won the game in 1950," Day said. "Well, I wouldn't have wanted to be sitting next to him when it happened."

He said the family has cheered for OU and LSU all year with hopes that the teams would meet in New Orleans.

When OU opened the season in throwback uniforms from the Bud Wilkinson era, the family thought of the art piece.

"My son called me and said, 'Did you see them wearing Granddaddy's Oklahoma uniforms?'" Arless Day said. "We thought it was a sign of things to come. We thought it may be a sign that the two teams would play again."

Aden said she had a feeling this was the year the two teams would meet.

"Whoever wins, it doesn't matter," Aden said. "It's just a chance for more people to see Dad's art. He would just be thrilled."

Sugar Bowl art

Sooner fans who would like to view the piece while in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl can find the Ogden Museum at the University of New Orleans. The museum is home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art in the world. It is at 925 Camp St. in the New Orleans Warehouse District. Museum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

I know the Ogdens, so I might be able to find out more about the figurines.

My wife found Charlie Mac's briefcase in a thrift store back around 2003. It's engraved as Charles McClendon. His wife, Dorothy Faye confirmed it was his briefcase when he was an assistant coach here. My wife scooped down on it like a hawk on a snake and paid $15 for it!

Wow, these things are all awesome. Kind of ma asked to get ideas on what would be coolest for a collectibles cabinet of sorts.
Signed baseballs and cards are easy to come by and cool in my opinion.
Will search for a signed BCS game ball from any winning year as well.
And of course, I want a signed Nola, Bregman, J. jones, or mahtook jersey. Preferably a game used with patches haha.

My favorite piece I have is the LSU 2011 BCSNCG poster signed by Les Miles with both my SECG and BCSNCG tickets in the frame with purple and gold matting. Would have been much better had we won.

Have every home and away ticket from 2011 and 2012 (my jr and senior year). They are also framed in my office. Again, lost in the damn chic bowl against Clemson.

Thanks for posting this, Blueboy.

I asked my mom for more information and showed her the pictures of your figurines. She said that she did not see these being sold at the games in 1959, but she and my dad had no money then and sat in the student section, so she was not surprised they missed someone selling something.

She then launched into a tirade about Billy Cannon's book, so that's all I got.

Appreciate the article re Bennie Day.
