The purple jerseys not being part of LSU tradition was as big an issue in the late 80's/early 90's as fans leaving the game early is today. I promise.
And yes, a lot of people equated that with losing.
I remember when Saban was hired, hearing people freak out one day on the radio - wondering if he was going to destroy the white jersey at home tradition that Dinardo fought to get back.

if you subtract 17..... we only wore gold 3 times in the 90's. 1996 against vandy, 1997 against ND and 1998 against UF.

I don't mind the purple, but think they'd look better w white pants and helmets.
My fave was what I like to call the beat down jerseys. All white vs auburn last yr. one of the most satisfying victories of my lifetime.
