Contact your local sportswriter. The term "safety" for a hit is old school, but it is often used just to put some variety into an article. It's a pretty safe bet that if you checked the articles on spring training in the Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, etc. papers over the past few weeks you'd find it used several times. The writer is neither quirky nor bad -- it's a shame that the fact that you aren't familiar with the term makes you feel so inferior. Get over it.....
