Dale thought he was above a women's game and wanted to run them to the basement

Lester Earl lied.
quote: In the August 22, 2007 Baton Rouge Advocate, Lester Earl issued an apology to Brown, then-assistant head coach Johnny Jones, and LSU in general for his role in the NCAA investigation. Earl now claims that the NCAA pressured him into making false claims against Dale Brown or else he would lose years of NCAA eligibility.

As a guy in his mid-20’s I’d like to turn this comment upside-down a bit...I was 6 or 7 going to games at the PMAC when CJ and Shaq were there with my family and also started going to football games…a few years ago, my brother and I were reflecting back on that at the time and in our memories it felt LSU basketball felt bigger than LSU football. At the PMAC, sold out crowds were the norm, Mike would come down from the ceiling before tip-offs and the place was rocking. Meanwhile, there were tons of empty seats at football games where the most passion that was shown was grown men yelling to fire the coach. Daddy Dale did over-achieve with lesser talent and under-achieve with greater talent. But most importantly, he made LSU basketball matter. It’s more than just winning. I don’t think there was a real sell out during Brady's Final 4 season. Tim Brando made this point yesterday on the Finebaum show…for all of Bruce Pearl’s flaws, he’s made Tennessee basketball matter again, and the fan base has embraced him for that. Today at LSU (in every sport other than football), a coach has to be a marketer in addition to being a great coach…
well said. I remember those too, but I am a little older in my 30's.
Basketball was good then, & football was not, But I agree that the PMAC when full & rockin is more fun that Tiger Stadium.
Daddy Dale was a great recruiter, great motivator, and good coach. He will always get knocked for not winning it all with CJ & Shaq. But he did make LSU basketball entertaining!

Lester Earl was not Dale's only blackmark, remember ron abernathy caught with all that cash in the L.A. airport. Dale had his moments here. He also left this program to die his last few years. The 81 final four team was probably one of the best teams in LSU history, and because Rick Huckabee was on the bench is the only reason they got there. Dale Brown couldn't coach, his assistants could. Huckabee was the reason we went to final four. I can't think of the other coach's name who was with him in 86, he COACHED that team. the older guy who was with the lakers for so long. Anyway Dale Brown put LSU bb on the map and for that we should be thankful.... he also called the NCAA The Gestapo and LSU has paid for that comment everytime we have a chance to get a descent seed, just look at the past history of the seeds we have gotten, never where it should have been. It just kills me how he always wants to show up when everyhthing is going good, he never missed TJ's first year games, I wonder how many he's been to since that first year, with exception of watching going to the NTSU game for JJ..

All hail Daddy Dale and the Hustlers

Dale was a great recruiter, not so good coach. His teams were widely viewed as underachieving. Everyone love Daddy Dale but anyone who tells you otherwise is full of shite, is too young, or has no memory.
Idiotic and clueless comment. A few of Dale's teams could be classified as underachieving. And just as many, and certainly more, would be classified as unquestionably overachieving. The 1985-86 team had one guy who played in the NBA, John Williams, yet they went to the final 4. The 1986-87 team had NOONE who ever played in the NBA and lost in the Round of 8 to Indiana (who won it all). The starting 5 on that team, Darryl Joe, Anthony Wilson, Bernard Woodside, Oliver Brown and Nikita Wilson, with Jose Vargas and Fess Irvin as the main subs. Even an idiot such as youself can't consider that team to have underachieved.

Dale Brown was the main reason for basketball's popularity in Baton rouge.
And in the whole state for that matter. I first met Coach Brown when he did a whirlwind tour of random high schools and tournaments in '72. He had a real passion and vision to popularize LSU basketball in the state. I'd say he succeeded in spades. Very down to earth guy who just loved to talk basketball. For the better part of two decades LSU was generally considered one of the top 20 basketball programs in America. Amazing to think about that now. Something we may never see again.

I think you guys need to knock the cobwebs off. Dale wasn't that great of a coach. His only success came with overachieving teams.
Isn't that the definition of a good coach?

Dale Brown was never a good coach, he was however a great recruiter and a hell uv a motivator. He had 3 future NBA All Stars on one team and we didn't even make it to the sweet 16. Bobby Knight put it best," Give me just one of those players and I would win a national title.

Dale had his moments I agree. Some folks think he was a phenomenal coach and he is worshipped by many. He was OK overall IMO.

I was so lucky to attend LSU during the Chris Jackson/Shaq years. Even though football was sucking, the basketball was awesome.

Actually Dale is the reason it sucks now. Remember that whole probation thing surrounding Lester Earl? That was Dale's doing.

I was watching the CJ video in the other thread - remember the PMAC being full and loud? Its been so long.

Some contribute it to Jackson, Shaq, etc. The fact of the matter is this... Dale Brown was the main reason for basketball's popularity in Baton rouge. I don't think he gets enough credit.
It started long before CJ and Shaq.
