Thats like asking Hugh Heffner how he feels when a bunny leaves the house. It sucks but then he looks around and realizes it will be ok.

This. Although at that time I do not know that the house was full of bunny qb's ha, but we look to be in good shape now!

Thomas wouldn't have been anymore productive at LSU than JJ has, so no big loss.

When he's eating Jerry Jones turf Labor Day weekend, we'll feel better about it.

Darron fits a system like Oregon, Auburn, or Florida better than LSU. He may have been a square peg in a round hole in LSU's offense. To me, Darron is a version of Russell Shepard with less highlight reels back in high school. Masoli is also an example of the type of system Oregon runs. Just because he does well at one school does not mean his skill set will transfer well to another.
I agree. Pat White was another qb who declined to become a wr. He enrolled at WV and was very productive. Both Thomas and White are/were excellent college quarterbacks in the systems they used. I agree that our system would not be the best fit for that kind of talent at quarterback.

I think it's quite possible that we'd have won a NC last yr with him at QB. he throws the ball better than JJ, even if he doesn't have JJ's arm strength. and he provides the same type of run threat.

only things are I don't know 1) how much of that passing ability is Chip Kelly's doing and if Crowton would have been able to do the same with him and 2) if he could hold up against an SEC schedule as he seems a lil light in the arse.

When was the last time you heard about ONE player being a huge superstar at LSU anyhow? That's what should concern you if you're Oregon. Think about it.

can't imagine him being successful in a Pro-style offense. When we tried the Spread, we sucked at it, so I don't really think he would have been a fit here. Pretty much, Oregon runs the perfect offense that really suites him to a T.

Exactly- Thomas is a 'system' QB, doubt he would habe been productive at LSU...the rant would probably be on his arse just like JJ...

How does Oregon feel about losing Jared Randal next year to LSU at QB?

Seems like he's clone of Russel Shepard who can probably throw better TBH

He would be a 4th WR?

Difficult to say.

1) 2008 was a weird year for us. We had DT, JJ, and a third QB named DC Jefferson who ended up going to Rutgers. I'm pretty sure that guy got converted to TE.

2) Obviously, we had 3 QBs committed, and in the end, only JJ showed up on campus.

3) It is difficult to say whether JJ's lack of progression was due to his QB coach and the offensive system (Crowton) or whether it is due to JJ's lack of mental ability to process the game.

4) If JJ is a product (or victim) of Crowton's system....I'm not sure Darron Thomas would have had any more success.

It seems like Darron is a great fit for Oregon. But he's not a great QB.

5) I believe there was a chance we would have turned DT into a WR. So there is no guarantee he would still be a QB had he chosen LSU.

My first thought is he's rather thin to play qb in the SEC, JJ has taken some serious hits and DT looks smaller to me so I think the coaching staff at the time thought he would be moved to wr. He wouldn't have gotten any qb coaching it seems though so he made the right decision for him all the way around, good for him

Darron knew Jordan Jefferson was a better pro style QB at the time. He probably also felt threatened by the fact that Jordan was a hometown kid.

Yeah...this isn't right. He left because Miles called him an athlete and he knew he'd never get to play QB at LSU.

ETA: I shouldn't say left. He never came. He backed out of his commitment and committed elsewhere.

This is what I remember as well. The guy who left because of JJ's commitment was D.C. Jefferson.

Again, RUTGERS turned that guy into a TE. So he definitely would not have panned out as LSU's QB and he made the right move (maybe).

Darron thought we weren't being straight up with him, and Oregon gave him an unequivocal answer about his position. Seems like he made a good choice in the short term, at least.

The problem I have with that kind of thinking goes back to the Pat White example.

You can have a great 4 years as a college QB, but that will actually reduce your chances of having a successful career (at WR) in the NFL.

So did he make the right choice? Maybe not. He certainly seems to be enjoying himself, though, so more power to him.

Dont really care honestly, product of Kelly's offense.
I doubt hed thrive as QB on any SEC team, outside of being with Malzahn at Auburn.

Watching that link again makes me wonder. Did Bob Jones have a relationship with Lyles? Seems Thomas didn't know anything about Oregon until Jones started talking them up to him.

Uh, yeah right.

Get real, he saw he had a better opportunity at Oregon so he took it.

Not as bad as signing Perrilloux and losing Colt McCoy to Texas.
