misconception. It's completely acceptable to change the spelling of words in a quote transcripted from someone else. They're considering this to be a misspelling of their school's acronym.

Dude, not it's not.

If they are teaching this in J-School now or if you do that at your place of publication . . .

It's not a misspelled word. It's not like changing "theater" to "theatre"

Changing the quote is one thing, but their whole obsession is pathetic. It's ULL get over it.

Yes, it is unethical, because we ALL know what they are doing and why they are doing it.

yes it is.

This is frequent all over in Journalism. If they consider a word in a quote transcripted by someone else to be misspelled, they can change the spelling.

If a press release contains a misspelled word, you can bet that it will be corrected before it even hits the editers desk.

You obviously don't get it. We are not talking about misspelled words here.

I obviously DO get it. You're pissed that they changed your coaches quote from saying ULL to UL. They consider that to be a misspelling of their schools acronym.

Now....you guys have fun being butthurt over something as trivial as this. I gotta go take a massive shite, shower, and start my day.

The phrase "ULL" came out of the man's mouth...you can not justify changing it in print to "UL". Mainieri did not SAY "UL". He said "ULL". How hard is that to understand? They changed what came out of the man's mouth. That is unethical, no matter how you look at it. They can edit the rest of the press release how they like, JUST NOT THE QUOTE.

Changed quote....that is exactly what they did, and you just said it. They CHANGED HIS QUOTE. You just basically made our point for us.

.....not denying this. I'm just saying it isn't as "unethical" as you're making it out to be.

Who are they to say he (PM) misspelled their school acronym? By the way, ULL is the correct acronym according to the state law. They edited a quote to agree with their agenda of trying to be the University of Louisiana (no Lafayette).

Misspelling in print is one thing. Changing what he said, even if he made a mistake (which he didn't) is not proper editing. It isn't correcting a "spelling mistake." I may consider Obama to be wrong when he says "Obamacare is good." But that doesn't entitle me to change it to "Obamacare is bad. " in a press report on his speech and claim he just misspelled (or mispronounced) "bad".

most people in laffy say UL because it sounds better than ULL, not because they are trying to piss LSU fans off. Also, pretty sure everybody in the country knows of LSU as the school of Louisiana and not ULL so why all the hate. Let the little guy be called what it wants its not hurting anything but your egoes.

"We had a good practice yesterday, and we were ready for this game," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, "but [UL] just completely outplayed us. They strung together the hits they needed in that big fifth inning, and our hitting was just too sporadic. Give credit to [UL] - they have a very good club and they played very well tonight.

As someone also in the journalism world, the above is how you could handle the situation. However, even that's a stretch. Point is that that ULToday unethically changed a quote. Open up that dusty stylebook of yours and you will never find where it is acceptable to change a spoken quote without so much as referencing the change.
