I am beyond sick of people saying Les Miles = Larry Coker.

I don't think it's a good comparison either.

Some universities just sell itself. Michigan State didnt. LSU does. Alabama does. Florida does.

Look, I can tell from your posts that you've played the game at some level, you've been around the game and know the game. So what do we disagree on exactly? Well you think that Miles isn't anything special as a recruiter and that anyone could recruit here now because Saban "got it all set up" cuz it's just on autopilot. You really believe that?

The CFB landscape is littered with programs that "sell themselves" but fell on hard times every so often because of poor recruiting. Start with USC, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska etc.... they all had things "all set up" on the recruiting front at one time or another and lost it. You would contend that they lost "it" because they got a poor strategic coach that lost too many games and screwed the pooch.

I say its because they got coaches that couldn't recruit well enough to keep the wins coming and keep the program stable.

I will use Butch Davis as my example of what I believe. Now Davis went into a downtrodden program, one never known for football success and one that is pretty hard to recruit to. So he comes in and starts having modest success, but really no different than others before him. Here's the big BUT though, he was recruiting his arse off, you say "charisma" is bullshite but there are natural born leaders in this world and people gravitate towards them. All you had to do was look at the guys he had recruited and see what he was primed to do this year and know that had he not run afoul of "agent gate" this would have been a breakout year for NC. Watch how many of the guys he has recruited get drafted in the next 3 years. Go back to the previous 10 years of NC football and see if they can match the number of drafted guys he will have.

This how you turn a program around, by getting your "Jim's and Joe's" first and then you start winning. You don't start winning with "coaching ability" and then your recruiting picks up.

You can argue the other side if you want, or you can use a different word than charisma if you want (and yes I agree that having a NFL background and connections also contributes mightily to your recruiting efforts)but at the end of the day, people are attracted to the personalities of good recruiters. The recruits themselves talk about this over and over again...how they have formed a "relationship" with a coach and how they feel he really "cares" for him and how much he wants to "play" for him.

Good recruiting takes many qualities in a coach but mostly its just that "IT" quality, and Miles has "IT".

Your argument is that it takes more than just good recruiting to win. My argument is that it does NOT take more than that! I say get the players here and be average as a coach and you will win. You scared of Jim Tressle or Bob Stoops, or Phil Fulmer, or Mack Brown, or Pete Carroll as a strategic gameday coach? I sure ain't, and ALL those guys have won NC's!!
