Both juniors who would lose leverage by coming back. Also, with the influx of pitching, there may be less innings available.

Coming into his freshman year he was lights out at the plate. Very consistent hitter with some pop. LSU didn't like his swing, forced a change and kind of messed with him a bit. This year, same thing, Ochinko changed it again, but he was getting more comfortable with the change late in season. It showed. They did the same thing actually to Feduccia after he broke his hand. Forced a change in his swing and changed some fundamental things behind the plate, which actually led to his other hand getting broken.

Well he single handedly made sure we lost a national championship. Good riddance.

A college coach shouldn't care about players' leverage.
And I know we should be getting a huge boost if Walker, Labas, Hilliard, Storz etc. can stay healthy, plus the freshmen. But after seeing us trot out Moffit in an elimination game vs the best lineup in the country, I'd rather us stockpile quality arms even if it means losing some position player depth.

Great idea lets send Slaughter to rookie ball with a bunch of dominicans throwing 100mph. What can go wrong with a guy that swings in the same spot and only hits a ball when a pitcher hits his bat.

He should if he wants recruits to believe he has their best interests at heart. It’s going to be hard to convince recruits to pass up Major League Baseball or choose LSU over [insert school] if they don’t believe Mainieri will be honest with them.

If he could have guaranteed Slaughter a starting role next year, he probably would have advised him to stay.

Dude batted .230 or so. Not good at all. Below average third baseman

He'll never get drafted higher

It's based of potential

Why not go ahead and sign since a starting spot isn't a certain next season.

No he didn't. He batted .254. With a .346 OBP and .432 SLG. He wasn't a bad hitter this year. Some of you get something stuck in your head and you don't have the ability to ever adjust your thoughts based on statistical evidence.

And he certainly wasn't a "below average" third baseman. At worst, he was average. I would argue he was above average. Probably about a 7/10. He made a lot of phenomenal plays. He did make a few too many errors on routine plays however.

He could easily have been drafted much higher next season if he returned and improved his batting average by 50 points to over .300 with the same walk rate and ISO power. He has everything MLB is looking for.

Look at Jacoby Jones. He wasn't much better than Slaughter in college and he's starting in the big leagues now.

Slaughter was good in spurts. Not consistent tho. The good players are consistent.
Duplantis, Watson last year, Cabrera once he got acclimated.

I loved slaughters power and was happy for him when he did well. We all waited for him to get that consistency. It just never happened. He did well towards the end of the year but two whole years shows a different story, and his defense left more to be desired.

Sure, we would all love to have all consistent superstars. But you'll never have 9 of those guys in a college lineup. I would rather a completely inconsistent guy who at least flashes that level ability in spurts versus a guys who is consistently average to not very good.

I don't get why some fans prefer the guy who is consistent (albeit not very talented). Consistent lack of talent doesn't win too many games.

Why wouldn't he have worked as a 6'2" 1st baseman?

As much as I pulled for him to improve he seems to have capped out here at LSU.

I understand the reasons he left

I liked him a lot at 1B last year. I remember him making lots of good digs out of the dirt. I just think it came down to scholarship money and it’s time to see what the incoming guys have. It is the number 1 class. If Turang comes, and that is a big if, then Slaughter’s only option would have been 1B. Not sure of all the players coming in but I think one of those catchers will play 1B.
In the end I think it was time to move on after hearing all the news about his dad, his inconsistency, being in his own head, and the lack of scholarship money.

I’m happy for Jake and hope the best for him.
