Al McGuire really got that nickname going, at least in Jones' freshman year. 1980-1981, Dale's first Final Four team and Jones' freshman year (yours truly's,too
) NBC still did the NCAA tournament and the only nationally televised college games. CBS didn't get the tournament until the next year and ESPN was only in its second year and didn't show live games yet.
Point being, McGuire had just retired from Marquette after winning the '77 title and was very colorful and popular doing his analyst role with Billy Packer and play by play guy Dick Enberg. NBC showed only two LSU games before the NCAA tournament, Texas A&M at the PMAC and Kentucky in Lexington. Still with LSU having such a fantastic season, during timeouts, blowouts of other games they would talk about the top teams that year of which LSU was one of them and various players.
"The Bullet" was of course a play off Maravich's "Pistol" and Jones did have lightning quickness. LSU's depth on that '81 team was just unreal and Jones was any where from the 7th to 9th man on that team. When Jones would spell Ethan Martin late in a game, his opponent's tongue was usually dragging and Jones would run circles around him.
During an NBC game McGuire while they were talking about LSU would mention "that freshman down there, The Bullet." And Enberg would say,"yes, young Johnny Jones".
Now,its possible that someone else first came up with the name, but it was Al McGuire who made it popular at the time.

The misinformation here is running rampant!!! He got the nickname because he went to every basketball game drunk.... he drinks Coors light!

I-59, we may have passed each other on the sidewalk between between Allen and Himes; or stood in line outside the PMAC. I was a freshman in fall of '80 also.
