How in the frick is that a strawman? Maybe on your end. I said his defenses get worse every year and I gave the rankings to back it up.

ETA Look at ypp with defensive rankings and you'll see there's no direct correlation with overall defense.

But rankings have nothing to do with our defenses improving or going backwards since rankings are based on every other team as well. I gave you what our defense has done objectively, with the most basic and true judgment of a defense, yards per play and it showed that we haven’t regressed ever year. Other stats are influenced by offense since volume is based on amount of plays or non defensive TD for totals and points. The strawman was you using factors that have literally nothing to do with our defense in response to the most definitive measurement possible.

He calls everything a strawman.

We have given up 33 TDs this year. That's more worrisome than anything else.

Compare that to OSUs 13.

Last year the #18 defense had the same as the #1, #2 having the best.

You said our D regressed every year under Aranda. That is incorrect since between 2017 and 18 we improved by .3 yards per play, the same measurement we dropped by from 16 to 17.

Why is ypp the ultimate metric? You want to blame big plays, but we give up a lot of them. AND cant get off the field. Maybe our ypp is all right, but remember why we only had 45 plays against a pedestrian offense like Florida? All of their drives were over 10 plays and ate up a ton of clock.

We've sucked in multiple fashions this year.

My big metric for defense is "get off the field so our offense can get back on".

Because it’s the least affected by outside factors. And it’s funny you mentioned 3rd down because that’s one of our best metrics. 17th nationally and 3rd in the SEC.

Btw I don’t disagree that the D has been bad this year. My point was we haven’t regressed every season.

I just wish they would devote more time teaching the fundamentals of tackling because I’ve seen way too many guys not wrapping up and also diving at ankles

For the most part though I’m not having issues with the scheme

We’re going to live and die on man coverage:

We aren’t going to blitz 7 and you shouldn’t against decent teams.

We need more
Pass rush out of our DL/OLB.

Logan, Lawrence, Fehoko and Chaisson have been very disappointing.

With all of the armchair coaching here, no one has commented on the obvious...
Our secondary has under performed all year and has given up tons of big plays. We rush 3 or 4 due to poor play in the secondary. We're having to double and over the top protect on a large % of plays.

Just like our offense last season needed a better OL to protect Burrow. The DL needs upgrading to better rush the passer and stop the run with just 4 DL. Help is coming, and next season Aranda's defensive struggles from 2019 will be an after thought.

Interesting that you bring up the o line. My point the last several years was the talent was there it’s just an antiquated scheme wasn’t allowing the players to succeed. I.E. narrow splits crowded front and predictability allowed the opposing defensive line and blitzers to tee off. Now with essentially the same players they are regarded as one of the best units in the country. What changed? The scheme

fricking, this. When I read the title I said "why do these guys need help? The line has 4 monsters on it 2 of them projected first rounders.

There is a big difference between offense and defense though.

Xs and Os take you a lot farther on offense. End of the day If a CB can’t keep up with a WR and a DL can beat a 1 on 1 block there is only so much you can do.

Defense is still mostly about talent.

Especially now that offenses are getting better and better and making defenses show their scheme before the snap.
