You'd think mental rantardation would die down at least a hair with football being over with, but hot damn. I thought wrong.

I know we are only a handful of games into the season, but what I love about this team is that they have more walks than strikeouts to this point. Some of this has to do with the pitchers faced, but our hitters seem more disciplined (from last year).

This team appears to be a little more well-rounded, it appears, than those 90s teams. I know about the change in bats and different eras.

DJ does look like the real deal - no sophomore slump. He is up there with the Russ Johnsons, as one of the best we have had. The rest of the lineup is solid with a couple of others who could be in the all-time greats discussions (e.g. Dean).

We are solid batting, top to bottom and strong up the middle defensively. Very fews errors and good team speed.

I think our pitching staff has the potential to be a great one - one where we can throw quality guys every outing.

Let's not anoint them the best yet though. I am ready to see how they respond to pressure, SEC, travel, adversity, slumps, etc. All signs seem to point to them responding well though.

It's early, but the STYLE of play is better than Gorilla Ball. The reason I say this is that those teams relied on the 3 run homer. If the wind was coming in and they were facing a decent pitching staff, they struggled at the plate. This team hits for power, for average, and they will easily shatter the LSU and SEC SB records (156 and 215, respectively). I also believe that they are a better fielding team than the mid '90s teams.

It's too early to annoint them as the greatest ever, but it may be a good idea to go ahead and get your travel arrangments for Omaha squared away.

Take away the larger bats and the juice that the 97 team was on and maybe you can compare them.

I get it if you like this style better, but to say one style is better than the other is rantardish

hardly

You really think they will easily top 215 sb? I'll bet you they don't steal 200

by all means do it, but doing it is a risk

The thing that scares me the most about this level of hype is the the ridiculous letdown we'll see from the more casual fan when we almost inevitably lose a game. And we will. Baseball is too fickle of a mistress to expect an undefeated season.

we will win the CWS, not lose any games, and then be declared the best team ever in college baseball. They will then allow us to play the winner of the World Series and we will beat them in 4 games

I know some young fans don't understand this, but these expectations were like this every year from the late 80s to the early 2000s. It wasn't a question of getting back to Omaha, it was expected. It wasn't a question of just getting back to Omaha, winning in Omaha was expected. These expectations are why we fired a coach that won the SEC and went to Omaha twice, but went 0-4.

I am glad to see such high expectations back. I missed our cocky and confident baseball program.

Well, let's review what I ACTUALLY SAID.

I said that, imo, this 2009 team was a far more complete team, and a much more versatile team, than the teams we had back during the days of Gorilla Ball. I mean, that should be obvious to just about everybody who understands baseball. Those Gorilla Ball teams, by and large, couldn't run and weren't that good defensively. Some were better than others, but most of the players on those teams were recruited b/c of their ability to crush 3-run HR's. Not a bad strategy during the era of the live bats, but not really baseball in it's purest form.

Other than that, I finished by saying that this 2009 team "might" end up proving to be the best team LSU has ever had. I stand by that.

You know, it's never too late for some of you guys to invest $200 bucks in "Hooked on Phonics"

I sorta thought it was because he ran the program into the ground and ONLY had any accomplishments due to playing with Skips talent he was left. Smoke was horrible. He was handed the keys to the best program in the nation and in 4 years turned them into a below average team.

How many college baseball programs you know would fire a coach with a record of 210-109-1 (.658), 1 conference title, 4 NCAA appearances, 3 SR appearances, and 2 CWS appearances in 5 seasons?

He sucked big time by LSU standards.

Why does that scare you? You people are downers. I thought the point of sports, from a fan perspective, was to get excited when your team does well.

Never be afraid of success, boys. We have a great coach, and an extremely talented.....and versatile.....baseball team.

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

The thing about this team is that it is probably the most COMPLETE TEAM that LSU has ever had.
I know most people on here don't know anything about the '75 team that won the conference and was one win away from Omaha, but this team compares favorably to that one.
The difference between this years team and teams from the "Gorilla Ball" era is that this years team puts so much pressure on the opposition 1-9 at the plate and on the bases that any weaknesses the opponent has is magnified.
Nobody is a sure out and practically everybody is a threat once they get on base. That's a lot of pressure for a pitcher and the d. They can't pitch around anybody and with LSU's base running speed, they absolutely cannot afford to make an error. And when they do, it almost surely costs them.
When LSU is in the field, that same speed, coupled with talent, again gives the Tigers an advantage in that the opposition virtually HAS to hit the ball well to score. Again that puts pressure on them. LSU's pitchers have to be just good enough to put the ball into play and let the d work. K's are a bonus.
When you add in the depth coming off the bench like never before, this LSU team does indeed have the POTENTIAL to be LSU's best team ever.

And Miracle Mike Miley was the best SS ever at LSU!

and no worries I'm sure its not your fault for the way we are performing, it was everybody's fault whose expectations of this season were to be undefeated, I really wish we weren't ranked in the top 5 in the preseason
